HDD installation?

Hey guys, my computer just died and I'm going to build a new one to use until I can order some good parts and I had a question, can I just attach the old HDD and it will run the OS? By that I mean will it start up so I can get on the internet and install the drivers?

Most likely no, as it will be a different motherboard with different hardware and it will just keep rebooting on you or will bsod on you. New motherboard means a fresh install of windows.
 
So could I use a different mobo, install windows on that, and use my old C drive as a separate drive and keep all my old files?
