Good settings for Night Shots

Hey guys, I need some help. What are the best settings for the camera to take the clearest possible shots at night? Not under streetlights or anything. Just moonlight or for example if I want to take a pic of a tree contrasting with the moon or something.

Thanks! :D

P.S. I have the Fuji S700

Set the shutter speed to the lowest speed.

I set it ISO200 it is enough. Make sure you use a tripod. I suggest you use a countdown so that when you press the shutter it doesn't move while taking the picture.

If you want to take the moon, don't set to low shutter speed, it will have too much light. When I took my picture of the moon, I set the aperture to Fmaximum (I don't remember the exact number :P)

Make sure you post your picture here :D
good luck :)

Thanks man, I'll keep that in mind :)

Yeah I usually use the timer mode for dark situations but I wasn't sure about aperture, shutter speed or ISO.

You can experience the difference with ISO :) Too much will make the picture look like grains (see what I mean? :P).

I'm not an expert yet on aperture, I'm learning :), but I had two different settings when taking the moon and taking the city, because the moon was making a lot of light.

Just as Punk said, just one thing I might add... I might of already told you this (I've been telling a lot of people this lately) :D go to your library and get the book "Understanding Exposure" it's REALLY good and it tells how to do night photography in it. Seriously, read it, your photography will improve (that isn't to say, of course, that it's in any way bad at the moment.) :)

Here are some shots I took at night:

Moonlight: ( the clouds were moving which explains the blur clouds :))

Nice! I love the moving clouds! What ISO did you use? I noticed how they are really small. :D

@ Angus: Those are some sweet pics man, loving the first one! ;)

Yeah I've seen that higher ISO makes lots of noise but then what would be the benefit of higher ISO's? :o

And yep I remembered another example of night shots, it's taking city shots of cars you know. That's another thing I want to do.

@ Irishwistle: Thanks man, yeah you told me about this book before. I haven't had the chance to look for it though. Me needs to get it!! :D

Im still learning guys, bear with me!

OK. The pictures are small... I thought maybe you used a really high ISO and had to shrink them to make them look good. btw, you should get a deviantART account. :)

That's because Panoramio resize them :)

I will see and maybe create an account soon :)

The benefit of higher ISO's is so you can achieve faster shutter speeds when required. It does really depend on what camera though. Cheaper compact cameras do not tend to handle noise that well and tends to be visible from ISO 200 and above. My D200 handles noise very well and can get very usable pictures at ISO 800. I did have a chance to play around with the Nikon D3 the other week and that thing is amazing, ISO 1600 on the D3 is equivalent to about ISO400 on my D200, the quality is amazing, but then again the D3 costs £3000.

Thanks for the info man :)

So basically, the higher ISO will help with moving objects, but takes in less light and makes the pic grainy right?

the D3 costs £3000.
