Ghetto Rig?

So I've recently found out that my funds won't be as much as I'd thought. I was originally going to build either an i5 or a Phenom II BE rig, but it'll be a while before I can do that. I want something faster now, though, because my current computer is pretty old. (2.8GHz Celeron, Geforce2 MX, 1 Gb SDRAM)

My thought was to put as little as possible into a computer that would do most modern things(netflix, etc...) and play some older games, but is still a somewhat older technology and therefore cheap. Thing is, I don't have a lot of knowledge about computers from ~2002-2008. I do think I have an idea what I want, but I want to be safe, so here I am. :)

What I have so far is:

Pentium Dual Core E6300 (OC?) (AMD Equivalent?)

Gigabyte Mobo

MSI Radeon HD4550

Kingston HyperX 2GB
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820104072

I've already got a case, some fans, misc PCI cards, and the drives.

What I don't have is a PSU. I know I'll need 350-400W, but I'm not sure exactly what all connectors I'll need.

Looking to stay as close to 300 if possible. I'll buy something used if I have to, but i do want to get most of it new.

Don't need an os...i'm a student so win7 is $30 :D

Right now that you dont need...case, fans, misc PCI cards, and the drives....and OS...

What about this?

I say wait until you save another $50 or so and buy a Psu for it aswell :)

I know its over budget but i think for that extra $50-60 its well worth it....see if you went with a cheaper intel build like you listed...your going to end up getting an 775 socket system and in terms of upgrade-ability,Your stuffed because that socket is now dead.

hence why i went with AM3 build from AMD....you might be able to unlock that Tripple core processor to make it a Quad too,But don't quote me on that as im not all that good with AMD.

Actually i wasn't going to upgrade it...i was just going to build a whole new system eventually. You may have changed my mind though...that's an awesome system. I could go ahead and get a psu and a better graphics card and not have to upgrade anything for quite some time.
Thanks man! :)

Edit: so what would be a eccent psu for that?

Oops i mis-understood when you said,What I have so far is:

I thought you meant what you have in mind was...Not what you already had!

No, you didn't misunderstand. I was planning on eventually passing the el-cheapo one down and building another system from scratch. This would be just to hold me over till then. I didn't think i'd have the funds to build a modern system for quite a while, but you've solved that.:)

Edit: sorry if my posts don't make a lot of sense...i'm posting from an ericsson W750a.

The thing is,The Graphics card on my list isnt realy much of an upgrade from what you already have....again im sorry i didnt read through your post properly....i assumed those parts you listed is what you were looking to buy...:o

What do you realy intend to do on your system?...if its gaming you might want to look into getting a better graphics card than a 4650,Dont get me wrong its an okay card but not realy the best. :)

Yeh, the 4650 is a halfway decent card, it will do games like call of duty 4 and world at war relatively nicely, good budget card but i would put more money towards cpu/mobo first and then think about upgrading to a better gpu.

Alright...now that I'm on an actual computer I'll try and make some sense, lol.

My current system is in the first paragraph of the OP. It's pretty terrible. The Pentium Dual Core rig is what I was looking at, but didn't buy. I was thinking that I wouldn't be able to build a decent rig with my budget, so I was just going to get some parts to tide me over and build another completely new system later. I've been proved wrong though, and I think I'm indeed going for a decent low-budget rig now.

I really like the rig that Nevakonaza posted. I did go looking for a graphics card and, by narrowing the search on newegg, picked the same card as Linkin. There is a 4830 on Newegg but it's a 512MB versus the 1GB 4670...is it still better? (edit: and how well do DVI>VGA adapters work? All I've got is a Dell CRT. I'm fine with it but I need to be able to plug it in!)

So here's what I've got on the list so far.

I still need a PSU though, and I'm about useless when identifying these newfangled adapters. All I've ever used is PATA drives and Molex connectors.

edit: So Newegg's wish list thing is boned...it keeps adding the mobo and cpu from the intel rig back on to the temporaroy one after I delete it, and won't add anything new.

That's a private wishlist, make it a public one, I think you have to wait 24 hrs, I'm not sure then post the link to the public one, or just post the linkies ;)

I did make it public...

How's that?

I think for the price it will be a real nice build!

As i was saying with that X3...you should be able to unlock the extra core to make it a Quad core (Thats if you want to of course)

They mention on that motherboard i selected....

This motherboard can unlock the cores for the Phenom II X2 550 and the X3 720, however you MUST use the F2C BIOS. This BIOS is the only one that supports hybrid mode for ACC.

And another plus...

This is a great board. Takes my X3 720 to 4ghz and not a single setback from the motherboard.

Newegg wishlists are kind of screwey, this is the best way i have found to get the public link.
1. Get the numbers from the link to your private wishlist, in your case those numbers are "10127314"
2. Add those to the end of the following URL:
Code:
http://secure.newegg.com/WishList/PublicWishDetail.aspx?WishListNumber=
3. End up with the following link
Code:
http://secure.newegg.com/WishList/PublicWishDetail.aspx?WishListNumber=10127314
There is no waiting period of 24 hours or such, you just need to know the method to get to your wishlist. Another method is giving it a unique numerical name then searching for it in the public wishlists by that name.

Quite honestly that IceQ 4670 is a waste of money, you are paying an extra $15 for the cooler on it. I would just get a cheap 4650 for now such as this, or a standard 4670:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814161303
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814127448

A 4650 will play call of duty 4 and call of duty world at war and such with decent settings at decent framerates, plus these days 4gb of ram is almost a necessity.

Then use that money you save to get 4gb of RAM:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820226092
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231275
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231280

For hard drive.... this is $5 more, 180gb larger, and a much faster drive:

I thought as much, but Bodaggit or s/o kept repeating that they had to wait 24hrs, so I just came to believe it :D

I did make it public...

Alright...I think I've got it. You guys have helped so much...I never thought I could get a system like this at this price point.

I don't need 4GB of RAM(I'll upgrade later), but I do like that 1600MHz kit, as well as the hard drive. I did some more searching and found a good CPU+Mobo deal, and I think I have a better GPU as well. How's this?

Since I'm keeping the system I've upped the budget a bit to this plus whatever the PSU takes.

Speaking of which, a 20+4 pin PSU works with a 24 pin board, right?. I was thinking of this:

Diablotek PSDA500
