Formatting and re-installing XP

Hey guys,

I would like to format my computer, been having way too many software problems lately (have posted about them long time ago). The problem is that I don't have the Windows Install CD nor my serial number as I bought it a long time ago in Best Buy or some electronic store.

How do I get those infos? Can you also tell me what I should or should not do during this process?

Thanks for your help :)

Update:

I got the serial number, it was on the side of the computer tower :P. Anyone got any idea how to proceed next? I want to start fresh without anything installed on it, just the basic WinXP.

I've read a few tutorials online but none seemed to make me trust them...

I have found sometimes the number on the case doesn't match.
Grab a free app like Belarc Advisor and run it to compare.
You still need a cd.

It's there down a ways.
Not far past where it lists the hdd's and ram.
What brand comp do you have?

Try magicjellybean.

And you'd have to find a CD. You can either buy one or borrow one from someone. I don't think there's anywhere to download a legit ISO.

Copy both serial numbers just to be safe.

Use the COA on the side of the machine. If it's a stock load on that Compaq then the one you found with a keyfinder won't work, as it's a mass key used by the manufacturer. The COA on the side of the case will work.

My dad has a CD called "HP QuickRestore System Recovery CD" and under it "Microsoft Windows XP Home SP1". Can I use it on my Compaq??

No. That disc is specifically for the HP it came with.

It's funny how it is so hard to find a copy of WinXp when you need to reinstall it... Manufacturers don't give them anymore, Windows won't put it on their websites, seems like the only way for the average people is to buy another computer...

Find someone who has an OEM XP install cd and use your key to install. Most likely it won't activate, call up microsoft and tell them what you did and they will issue you a new key.

I've already asked a lot of people, none has it. And calling Microsoft? That's going to be a last resort, I don't want to pay anything to reinstall WinXP... I bought it already.
