flash drives

I wasn't aware of Flickr and the 1TB of storage there. However, using Flickr to backup photos and video, then backup docs on DropBox or whatever is not a solution I personally would consider. I guess if you're a real cheapie you would put up with such a scheme but I'd personally prefer to have a real backup solution rather than backup some files here and some there.

Flickr is more of a sharing site than a backup site so, by default, everything you upload is viewable by ANYONE. However, you can change the privacy settings to eliminate that. I see where you can upload multiple files at once but haven't seen the ability to download multiple files at once so restoring your data from Flickr would be a one-at-a-time process. Not really my idea of an ideal backup solution but it is free.

Another advantage to an external hdd over online backups is the ability to do system image backups and restores which not only backup your data, but preserve your system so that it can be restored to exactly the state it was in when the image was taken, complete with all installed programs.

Yeah I am not saying martin should use online storage instead of buying an internal or external hdd, but you can have all the drives you want, it won`t do much could in the event your house burns down.

So making use of online backup/storage is final defense against worst case scenario.

Yes, Flickr is more for photo sharing. I wouldn't really recommend it for backing up your photos. You'd be better off using DropBox or Skydrive for something like that.

There is nothing stopping you getting an external hard drive (or an internal one even) and using cloud backup. In fact, that's a good idea.
