I wasn't aware of Flickr and the 1TB of storage there. However, using Flickr to backup photos and video, then backup docs on DropBox or whatever is not a solution I personally would consider. I guess if you're a real cheapie you would put up with such a scheme but I'd personally prefer to have a real backup solution rather than backup some files here and some there.
Flickr is more of a sharing site than a backup site so, by default, everything you upload is viewable by ANYONE. However, you can change the privacy settings to eliminate that. I see where you can upload multiple files at once but haven't seen the ability to download multiple files at once so restoring your data from Flickr would be a one-at-a-time process. Not really my idea of an ideal backup solution but it is free.
Another advantage to an external hdd over online backups is the ability to do system image backups and restores which not only backup your data, but preserve your system so that it can be restored to exactly the state it was in when the image was taken, complete with all installed programs.
