Fake Windows Defender Virus...Please help!

I'm facing a few virus problems on my laptop.

Computer details:
OS: XP Pro.
Virus protection: Campus provided version of Symantec Antivirus, Spysweeper, handfull of other freeware spyware programs that don't conflict.

Virus problems started with symantec showing a detection re: MoveMediaPlayer_07076007.exe and removed a bunch of H8SRT7f78.tmp files.

Then I started getting windows defender warnings, and may have not realized that they were fake at first, so hopefully I didn't dig myself even deeper than I should be.

Now I'm getting fake windows defender, windows security, and various other windows telling me I have all kinds of trojans, worms etc. Of course, I get a window to purchase a false malware program called "Malware Defense"

Also, somewhere in all this mess, I got a warning regarding a suspicious.vundo.2 problem, but i unfortunately don't remember if this was one of the fake warnings or not. (sorry)

Start with this procedure and post both logs. Run Malwarebytes first then Hijackthis. You have an old version of hijackthis so please uninstall it and download and install the version I have listed at the bottom of this post.

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from here, here, here or here and save it to your desktop.

• Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
• At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to
  • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
• then click Finish.
• If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
• Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
• When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
• Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
• A log will be saved automatically which you can access by clicking on the Logs tab within Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware

If you continue to experience problems after doing this, please post a HijackThis log by doing the following:

Download the HijackThis installer from here.
Run the installer and choose Install, indicating that you accept the licence agreement. The installer will place a shortcut on your desktop and launch HijackThis.

Click Do a system scan and save a logfile

Most of what HijackThis lists will be harmless or even essential, don't fix anything yet.

Post the logfile that HijackThis produces along with the Malwarebytes Anti-Malware log

Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

Combofix should never take more that 20 minutes including the reboot if malware is detected.
If it does, open Task Manager then Processes tab (press ctrl, alt and del at the same time) and end any processes of findstr, find, sed or swreg, then combofix should continue.
If that happened we want to know, and also what process you had to end.

• A fresh HiJackThis log
• An update on how your computer is running

Hello again,
Just finished running combofix.
One accident on my part was that I did not turn system restore back on, so combo fix was unable to set a new restore point. I let it run all the way through as is and will await further instruction on the best way to set a new restore point once we're all wrapped up.

I'll attach the logs since they're too long to post on this forum.

System seems to be running a bit more smoothly. The most noteable symptoms of the whole fiasco were the fake virus scanners, which disappeared after the Anti-Malware scan.

Next questions will be:

How am I looking?

What's next?

should I / what's the best way to scan an external hard drive to check for infection?

Then click on fix checked at the bottom.

Then go into add/remove programs and uninstall all version of Java listed, the can be labeled as Java or J2SE runtime. Then go here and download the latest version of Java.

You also have an outdated progam installed "Ewido Antispyware 4.0", please uninstall that as well. You already have Webroot and Nortons already installed. You can use Malwarebytes as an ondemand scanner as well.

Also please go into add/remove programs and uninstall anything that has viewpoint in it, such as viewpoint manager, mediaplayer, or service. Viewpoint is considered foistware not malware but is widely recommended to uninstall it.

Other than applying these fixes, your clean.

Awesome! Thank you so much for all your help. You have been AMAZING! I have followed the end instructions. And everything seems to be working fine. A few questions...

Do I need to do anything for system restore? Now that I look, the "Turn system restore off" check box in unchecked. I had turned it off in safemode earlier.

I have been seeing some randomly named folders inside c:\
You can see them circled in red here:

Some contain just a few files, some many. A few of them contain SQL hotfix files. There is also one like this that managed to get on an external hard drive of mine. Should I be worried about malicious software, or are these just obnoxious files generated by legitimate programs on my pc?

Unfortunately, I have a somewhat half installed version of sql server on my computer. (I think conflicting versions of SQL Server and SWL Express bundled caused an incomplete install i was trying for a class, but I was never quite sure ...but this is an issue for later, just my suspicion for some of the random files)

Also, I'm guessing the new folder "Qoobox" circled in green is from combo fix since it was added tonight while doing the scan, but figured I'd run it by you.

Lastly, to check my external harddrive, should I just pop it in, and hammer it with scanners (minus combofix) ?

The folders are created by misc. programs that you have installed. System restore is running as long as that box is unchecked. To remove the files and folders created by combofix, we need to uninstall it by clicking on start, run and type combofix /u then click ok.

And I'm glad we got your system cleaned up.
