Does PSU have to be connected to motherboard to work?

i just got this ATX case with power supply..i wanted to see wut the lights would look like on the front so i plugged in the wire into the outlet and turned the power on but nothing happened..i then tried to connect the power supply wires to some of the wires inside the computer n that didnt work..remember i have no parts yet no motherboard etc. do i need the motherboard in order for it to turn on?..im guna get the parts soon but i was just wondering if the psu could give power without the motherboard..

PS. the psu i have doesnt have a light to indicate if the power is on..stinks

PSUs are "switching" power supplies which need a sufficient load in order to operate properly. That means the motherboard at least should be connected to it in order to draw some current.

But you can still turn it on without the motherboard

Connect the green wire and a black wire (with a paperclip) on the motherboard power connector, and it will turn on. And connect a hard drive or two, because of what OvenMaster said
