cut the case

There are small holes where my fan goes in my case, as the fan sucks in the air through those small holes it makes an incredible amount of noise, how can I rip out all holed part of the metal to place the fan so that it will be silent? What do I cut the metal with?

That metal is also protecting the fan from large objects and some dust, by removing it you risk having big objects get inside and damage the fan or computer components. The sound shouldnt be coming from the holes, my guess is that the fan isnt screwed in tight enough so its vibrating against the metal when it's running, so try to tighten the screws.

I've seen mention of this in print elsewhere. All the metal between the holes really slows down the air flow, and that makes a lot of noise. I want to get rid of the metal too and just put very simple wire grilles in place, at the most. I don't stick anything in there to get caught. I asked this in another forum ( www.audiokarma.org ) and they said the best way to get rid of the metal is to either use a Dremel with a cutoff wheel for metal or a nibbler. You'll need to totally disassemble the PC so metal shavings won't find their way onto any components.

Too much trouble? I'm afraid that's about as easy as it gets, short of a cutting torch down at the body shop, or a hacksaw.

Yeah.. That wouldn't work to well.

Just as oven said; you use a dremel and should disasemble the case.

I've done this mod and frankly it only cut out the noise by a little.

It really is a very simple mod. All you do it cut out the grill and then grind down the stubs, both done with the dremel. And then either buy a very simple wire grill of have none. Either is fine, unless you like to throw things in your pc through the fans.

Hope this helps,
