CPU temp over 90C in idle?!

Hi,

for a few months now i have occasionally had this problem where my system will just shut down instantly, as if turned off at the wall. It happens when using certain software i.e. converting video, burning video dvd's. I thought it was a problem with my graphics card at first but today i looked at the temperatures of my processor and i think i may have found the problem, but i haven't clue why? In idle the temp is over 90 degrees C. Which, reading up on it is ridiculously high! so when using intense cpu power this just works the cpu even more, hence shutting down before the whole thing melts!

I need to know why this is happening, even at idle. I have a fan at the front of my unit, one to the side and one at the rear, all sending air in the right direction, and of course one on the CPU. I have checked my bios setting and all the fans are running. I have also watch the temp's in the bios from turning the system on, within minutes its over 90. All the fans seem to be working so what else could this be? could this be a problem with my motherboard and the management of the fans? surely when its picks readings up of over 90c the fans should kick in? My system is just a year old, and its not a new issue, just that i have only just stumbled on a possible reason why? 90% of the time the system is used to brose the web, so its not as if the system if over worked very often?

Thanks for taking the time to read this, any help or ideas on this would be much appreciated!!

Kind regards

Marc

You running a stock fan? Have the temps. always been higher then normal. Have you looked at the CPU fan/heatsink to see if its full of dust?

sounds like a overheating problem to me. have you checked your thermal paste between your heatsink and processor core which may have been used up, if so i would seriously apply some new thermal paste over the processor core to ensure best heat transfer ;)

Wow, thanks for the quick reply!?

What do you mean by stock fan? the fans i have came with my case which is a Thermaltake soprano (if that means anything to you?) and the fan on my cpu looks to be an intel one?

Today was the first time i have checked the temps, but the problem that has lead me to this discovery has been happening for a long time.

I haven't looked at the CPU fan/heatsink, bit worried about damaging something. I have read about applying Arctic SIlver thermal compound. I intend to do this but i can't see how i will bring my temperatures back down to normal. Isnt a normal temperature about 40-50c?

Thanks again,

Marc

Hi Funnelweb, thankyou too for quick response.......never had such a response on a forum before :-)

I will def look into this, it sounds like it would help, even if it doesn't solve my problem completely.

As i just mentioned, would it have such a drastic effect as to bring my temperatures down to normal. I find it hard to believe that it will reduce the temp by 50 degrees or so?

Cheers Marc

there's definitely something not right.it shouldnt be hitting 90C.maybe the cooler is not seated right
ive a core i7 and i recently replaced my stock cooler for a artic cooling freezer 7 pro.
my temps were hitting 70c with the stock fan and it was too loud so i got rid.
my idle temps with the freezer 7 pro and artic silver 5 are now between 20 and 30c and 50c and 60c at 100% load.

heres a thread with positive feedback on it

when a cpu reaches its max temp it;ll automatically shut down your pc to protect itself

thanks driverdj2000, i've noted that fan incase thats the road i need to go down. It sounds like it would help a LOT!!
