What do you use to monitor CPU temp? I am looking for something that is free and has a display in my system tray...right now I have speedfan installed but I dont like it because I have to open it to see what my temp is.

You can have SpeedFan run on startup, and have the CPU temp shown in the task bar. Everest and Core Temp also show temps in the start bar, and can be set to start on startup.

I just found that out if I minimize it, it displays temp in system tray...thanks!

Is 56 degrees hot for a celeron D 2.93ghz?

While within the temp range for one, yes, it is a bit warm. I'd check to see there's no dust surrounding the CPU HSF, the fan is blowing at top speed, and the HSF is firmly attached tot he CPU itself. If your case doesn't offer great airflow, that would cause it to be warm, too.

For comparison, my Pentium D 940 runs at 32*C normally.

It's on the warm side, especially if it's just idle (not doing anything CPU intensive). Although I can't really talk as our family PC has a Celeron D 2.4GHz and it runs at around 60C idle.

Just took it apart and the heat sink was just packed with dust...used the hose from my vacuum to suck it all out and cleaned the fans and vents also. Now I am at 35 degrees...I picked this computer up for my kids for $50 and the people I bought it from said anytime they tried to run a program like burning a CD the computer would crash. Do you think it would be caused by the cpu getting to hot? The fans use to go 100% but now looking at speed fan they are all running at 45%.

That is extremely likely. As I said earlier, there are lots of heat problems with our families PC. I've cleaned the HSF, applied AS5, and even downclocked it and it still reached 65-70C under load.

Well I have been running cpu burn in for about 15 minutes now and its max temp is 57 with fans running 100%. Looks like it might be stable...good deal for $50 if it is, got a DVD burner, 80gig HD, keyboard, laser mouse and a 19" crt monitor. 512 mb of ram though...would like to get more? Do you think it would need more? Kids will just be surfing, playing some online games, burning videos and cd's.

That what I have been using for the past 2 years for the same things. I do have an 160GB hard drive but all my pictures and what not are on my laptop. 512mb or RAM is slow sometimes but it's workable at least for me for these things. If you were going to upgrade more RAM is what I would get.

Update...I let cpu burn in run all night and it is stable :D

$50 computers rock...lol! Time to turn it over to the kids
