Core 2 Quad Q9650 Problems

This afternoon I went and bought a brand new Q9650 processor to replace my E6750 which i found to be lagging behind. My father and I remove the old fan/heatsink and processor put the new one in... and try turning on the computer. What happens is this: My motherboard loading screen comes on, like normal, except from there nothing more happens. It just freezes. If I quickly press the "F2 key" which starts up my set-up wizard from boot, then it goes to there, and then freezes. It seems as if the computer only responds for about 10 seconds, and then freezes.

My motherboard is an ASRock Penryn 1600SLI-110dB
And the rest of my computer is listed in my signature. I am currently back on my computer running my old processor.

Any help or advice is greatly appreciated,

I would also say what Nevakonaza said...you will need a BIOS update I am willing to bet. The motherboard does support your Quad Core Processor. It says with BIOS version P1.40 which appears to be the latest version looking at the CPU support page for that motherboard.

It should give you step by step instructions on how to update the BIOS in the manual. You may have to put the old processor in and do this.

A couple things to try first:

1. Make sure all connections are good. Un plug them and plug them all back it.

2. Double check the CPU power cable...the 4 or 8 pin one next to the processor.

3. Reset the CMOS for the motherboard. It is a small battery, looks like a watch battery on the motherboard. Just pop it out and wait about 20 seconds and put it back in. Make sure all power is off and the power supply switch is off. You will have to reset up your BIOS settings.

4. Make sure the CPU cooler is not to tight. I have seen this before. It should just be nice and snug. Not wrench slipping knuckle breaking tight:D Make sure it is also attached good. Processors can overheat in seconds and shut down. Make sure there is not like one corner is not sticking up or something. You did put thermal paste on right?

Ok, well my dad's gone to sleep now, and I don't want to stuff around until he gets up, but thanks for the suggestions, I will try them all tomorrow. Is updating the BIOS a difficult task? Otherwise I think I might just try doing that to see if it helps. the CPU fan came with thermal paste already stuck onto it, and I doubt it is a heating issue as my old processor is running with the new fan at the moment. Gosh CPU fans are hard to get on aren't they? :) Thank you for the quick response btw i appreciate it, i will try all of these tomorrow.

If you could get back to me on whether or not I should consider the BIOS updates (i havent updated in over 1 and a half years) before doing the hardware checks, that'd be great.

If your computer shuts down so fast...you will not be able to update the BIOS unless you put the old processor in. That is why you should try everything else first:)
