computer won't boot

Can you try a different video card or borrow one? Unless you have extra parts to diagnose everything it may be simpler to just take it in and have it looked at.

I shut it down and rebooted and this time it booted up. so I am in the desktop. Is there anything I should do while if have it running. loading drivers etc. Please let me know, step by step and I will do it. thank you. Frank

PS. I just went into device manager and under other devises I am seeing the yellow question mark for ethernet controller, pci device, pci device, sm bus controller, usb controller and video controller.

Okay, I did all that and now there are no yellow question marks. I turned the computer off last night and happily it booted up in 45 seconds. It was taking 2 1/2 minutes before I changed out the hard drive. Anyways, this morning I booted up and again 45 seconds, I clicked on a few of the programs that come with the xp disc and it was working fast and beautifu, so I thought this nightmare is over. So the computer is on for 15 minutes and I am not doing anything on the computer, it is just on and all of sudden I hear a sound similar to what you hear when you remove a usb drive and the monitor goes to "no signal" but the computer is still on because I can hear the fans. What happened?

I just manually shut it down and rebooted. Booted up perfectly in 45 seconds again and is working fine again. I am just going to let it sit again to see if that happens again, but while it is on, do I need to check anything?

At the time, Yes I did because I uploaded a video file into Windows Movie Maker. When I heard that sound and the monitor went to no signal and I could not get the desktop to show by moving the mouse, I pulled out the usb thumbdrive and it made it's normal removal sound. Right now it has been on for 20 minutes. I am going to let it sit and see what happens. Is there anything else I can do.

Also, while I am waiting to see what happens, on a separate note, can you tell me what I have to do before going out to the internet for the first time. I can start downloading the necessary protection on my other computer.

I wouldn't be installing anything else until you figure out why the monitor keeps going black. Either you have a bad video card, bad monitor, bad cable or some other issue. When you installed the motherboard did you use the brass standoffs between the case and motherboard?

Okay, yes I did use the standoffs. One last question. It has been on an hour now and seems to be fine. Is there a point where this issue can be considered resolved (2 hours, 2 days 2 weeks) or is it one of those things that could reappear somewhere down the road so I better get to the bottom of it now.

Do some restarts, play around with it, use the internet for at least a couple days. I have a feeling your problems aren't over. Look in the event viewer to see if there any error messages explaining whats going on. Do you know of anyone that knows about computers that can help you diagnose whats going on?

I would at least download an antivirus program such as Avast or Microsoft Security Essentials.

Thanks John. I don't have a friend that could help but since I bought all my components from the local Comp USA, I might be able to ask them a question or two but I think they are going to charge me if I want a full blown diagnostic. I might have to bite the bullet here but before I do I would like to take your advise for a couple of day. One last question, Where do I find the "event viewer" that you mentioned? Thanks again.
