Hi all Hope I posted in the right spot

While using my computer all of a sudden it will just shut down. The monitor screen goes black and with in a sec or 2 the computer will shut down. I am thinking the power supply.

Windows XP service pack 3
pent 4 3.00 Ghz
2 gb ram

not the most up to date but usually runs like a champ

thanks
Mike

well to for use to be completly sure and to help you properly. it would help a whole lot if you post your complete system specs in addition to what you are doing when the comp shuts down.

but yeah i would also suspect the power supply first.

Help me out what other specs might help I am not a computer guru. Also, where might I find the complete specs. you are asking for.

The computer seems to shut down while running a program called "Aurora Scheduler" this Program controls my Christmas lights to music and runs the songs and lights (Its a Hobby)

I did manage to open my Bios and check my CPU Temp Shut down temp 80'C and I restarted the computer and watched the temp start at 54'C and climb to 64'C and hold steady. that seemed to creep up a little high I thought but I am not sure.

Thanks

do buy a can of air and dust out the computer 100% mainly all fans and heatsink. if you have too run vaccumm in case so when you blast the dust it wotn come in your face.

after all that then check your temps. if you droped alot then your problem was over heating. and you need some better fans and heatsink.

Good advice.

Bad advice. Vacuums create a static charge. Brush it against a component and you risk shorting out your system.

Using the air alone is fine. When the case is clean, the dust has settled, and the case has been moved, THEN vacuum the dust from the floor.

80 Celsius is on the hot side, so your motherboard might throttle the shutdown to prevent damage to the CPU. What power supply are you running? There should be a sticker on the PSU that will tell you how many amps is on the 12v rail, so report that here if you can.
