I have computer, roughly a 2005, i have no clue on what specs. About 3 months ago it slowed down really bad, and has only gotten worse. Its gotten to the point where my music lags when i scroll a page. Ive run norton to check for viruses and it says it virus free. Any ideas? thanks

I wouldn't trust Norton that much...
Could you post your HIjackThis log please? So we see is it virus caused, most of lags are...
Just a checkup

Norton Does slow down your computer but I've been using it for 5 years and for around three years was downloading when it was the Kazaa time... NEVER GOT A VIRUS. So I trust Norton :P

Hijackthis:

  • Save HJTsetup.exe to your desktop.
  • Double click on the HJTsetup.exe icon on your desktop.
  • By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Hijack This.
  • Continue to click Next in the setup dialogue boxes until you get to the Select Additional Tasks dialogue.
  • Put a check by Create a desktop icon then click Next again.
  • Continue to follow the rest of the prompts from there.
  • At the final dialogue box click Finish and it will launch Hijack This.
  • Click on the Do a system scan and save a log file button. It will scan and then ask you to save the log.
  • Click Save to save the log file and then the log will open in notepad.
  • Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" to copy the entire contents of the log.
  • Come back here to this thread and Paste the log in your next reply.
  • DO NOT have Hijack This fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

You're an exception...probably because you have a strong computer...

I never had a virus when i used Norton. Until I i ran a avg free scan. Then i realised i had viruses and norton didnt do nothin for me. Btw Yeah and its not worth paying for the slow down and paying for crappy protection. I use avg free. it works well. That hijack this thing is awesome also. if you can browse i would go for the avg free and the avg free spyware program. the spyware is a several month trial whereas the anti virus is semi permanent for now .

Well thats a very old p.c ,in today's era you need new hardware , you have to upgrade your p.c i can suggest you what kinda hardware you should install....
intel core 2 duo processer
2 G.b ram
n'vedia chipset ....

No, he doesn't... His hardware is not failing him (to the best of our available knowledge), and it seems to be solely a software issue. If his specs work for his needs, then why should we tell him to 'buy buy buy, upgrade, upgrade, upgrade' when all he needs is some software tweaking, and at most, a re-install. His system is middle-aged by today's standards - if maintained, it still has several years of life left.

Chiming in on Norton - yes, it's fairly low on the AV food chain. I ran it for years and had a 'clean system'. Upon upgrading to McAfee (yay, Comcast!), I was floored at how much Norton had been letting by. GameMaster and OP, just for fun, run the AVG as suggested and see what it finds - you may be surprised.

Also, ditto for the Hijack This. Granted it's a bit flaky in some regards, but generally offers very in-depth status reports.

To the OP: what happened 3 months ago? Music downloads? Questionable websites? Opening random .exe files? Allow a Remote Connection? Anything that stands out - no matter how minor it may seem?

Nice, but maybe you can pay all that?
Anyway you are out of the topic. Stick.

Oh dear...Seems that you have a dangerous Rootkit, which is certainly a reason for all your problems.
Please, it is necesserry that you change all bank account passwords and all, and contact someone. If you do any banking, there is a big possibility some1 already knows your passwords.
The best way then is to reformat your hard drive, if you wouldn't do it, beloware someways to clean the rootkit. I have also put there some websites that are suggested to read.
The best RootkitRemoval tool is RegRun.
Also, RegRun Reanimator.
I suggest you visit this page.

Note: I must warn you that anything you do isn't in my hands anymore. Therefore I'm not to be blamed. Or sth like that.

i appreciate your help. Can i still get your help though? Can i re-run hijack and post it up after i have regrun clear my computer, just so you can doublecheck? thanks alot

Yes, if you choosed not to worry about it, please post a fresh HijackThis log and we will see if it's cleaned of rootkit.

Hello!
Yes you got rid of the keylogger. I like doing one by one, but I must admit that this one I haven't noticed before: O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SlowDownCPU] C:\WINDOWS\INF\MSI\SlowDownCPU\SlowDownCPU.exe
We have to get rid of it. First you will move it from startup.
Go to START, RUN, search for 'msconfig' and look at the utilities. There's a startup tab which brings up a list of files. Just un-tick the Slowdown.
Reboot and it will tell you that you made some startup changes, click Do not show this message again.
After we moved it from startup, it has to be deleted.
Navigate to C:/WINDOWS/INF/MSI and delete all folders found in there.
Reboot again, and post a fresh HijackThis log.
I'm sure your computer will be as new.
Now a little note: You are lucky because on most infected computers that Spyware reboots computer every 2-3 minutes!! Also, it can't be found with any programs, except HijackThis as far as I know.
Good luck!

I have Norton on my computer too and I know it slows it down but my computer is starting to get ridiculously slow, and I don't think I can blame it on Norton anymore. They have protected me from viruses, so I can't complain about them.

My desktop has been freezing a lot lately and I constantly need to restart it. The simplest tasks sometimes take 30-60 seconds to complete, like opening an open office file or Firefox and it takes forever to start up or shut down. What are some general things I could look out for and do to correct these problems, other than getting a new computer or making major upgrades?
