Computer hanging up randomly

I posted this in the general software, but now I have come to notice it has been doing it a lot. I've had this computer for a year and a half and it's been fine. This week it's been hanging up randomly such as when I come back from the screensaver, it doesn't show the explorer bar and then hangs up. I can still move the mouse but I can't click anything and can't do Crtl+Alt+Del. It looks normal, then I click a desktop icon once, and it flashes blue once extremely fast, then it hangs up.

Sounds like you may have either some corruption in windows and or malware. Download and run ccleaner/adaware/spybot and at least one kind of virus i would reccoment avg/avast. Also boot to your xp cd and click repair and when you log into windows usually number 1 and no password type chkdsk /r and run that and see what happens.

I can't even scan without freezing. It only freezes when I'm not on and I leave for like 10 minutes. When I come back, it's frozen. I'm thinking it's a hardware issue? Anyway I could test this?

How could I test if I need new RAM or a new PSU? The only ! I have is on my ATI TV Wonder Pro, but that was installed about 3 months ago and I had no problem.

to test ram turn off the PC and take all the RAM out and boot with 1 stick at a time...if it doesn't boot with one...then well i guess u can put 2 and 2 together lol...if it were PSU i think u'd hear some sort of noises and if not u'll eventually not be able to turn the PC on....

and as far as ur vid card re-install driver or go to ati website and see if a new driver is available

It's a TV Tuner and it took me 3 days to install so I'm going to leave it alone.

what? That should take less than 10 minutes not THREE days! And if your a lazy guy like me download Memtest86 from microsoft make it a bootable disk and your done. Insert the disk, and boot from it. it willscan the memory. Justdownload and install the video card driver.

updating the driver takes less time than install from skratch

support at ATi website...search ur model Vid card and downlaod the specific driver

It's a long story, it was recognized, but it didn't come up as a video source for capturing programs and it took me forever to get it working. I opened Speedfan and when I was installing the Adobe Photoshop CS3 trial, my CPU was as hot as 67C, Internal and Remote Temp 50C, and my hard drive I was installing it on was 49C. Then it froze and I had to restart. I'm thinking of getting a Zalman 9700 to replace my loud cool master that came with my machine.
