Computer Died After 10 mins

Hey guys this afternoon i cleared the dust out of my desktop as the majority of the hardware was caked with dust. After doing this i plugged it back in and ran it for about 10 mins on better temps. Then the machines video cut out and i was wondering what the hell is going on. i switched the machine off and went to start it again and i lost lights and eventually the whole system. If anyone has had this same problem and knows a quick fix i would be very glad to hear it otherwise it looks like i will be taking all hardware components out and placing them back and seeing how that goes. Oh and this is my main computer (as in sig) so if you can post back quick it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for any help in advance.

not really just took the heatsink and fan out then the pci cards thats about all i took out and just used compressed air to blow all the dust out of the case/rest of the hardware that remained in there. Meanwhile i have taken every hardware component out of my computer and reconnected it to the bare minimum for the machine to run still no video/lights/speaker beeps or usb devices work at all. After 5 years could this machine have had it.

Did you clean and reapply thermal paste when you put the heatsink/fan back on the cpu?

What were the temps before, and what were the temps for the 10 minutes that it ran?

That is exactly what i was thinking as well, since you removed the heatsink you cannot just reinstall it, you need to clear the existing thermal interface material(isopropyl alcohol + coffee filters as a wipe works well) and then reapply it.

Yeah not this mobo its only a cheap asrock as my old motherboard carked it and i knew the machine was out of date so i just went with the cheap one. So where am i at now you reckon the cpu is shot.

Huh? it worked for 10 mins after the clean on idle windows xp desktop on 38* then for some reason the machine died.

Did you replace the thermal interface material or not? If you didnt, i would start by replacing that and then seeing what happens. Also check for loose connectors(motherboard 24pin/cpu 4/8pin, etc)

If you didn't re-apply the thermal paste, the thermal bond will have been broken, allowing the temperatures to soar. The way it's not starting at all now doesn't sound good at all...

Well explain to me why i have done this (clean dust out of the Heat Sink Fan) every 6 months since i got it without "re-applying thermal paste" and the machine has been running fine no problems. As i said 38* on windows desktop quite frankly i'm not sure you guys know what your on about.

Yeah 38c is fine so, its not the thermal paste. Unless, the paste is conductive and it piled over onto the chip or motherboard. In that case you fried something

Yeah thanks for listening nah no thermal paste has gone over to the mobo there is no stress marks on the CPU either so i dont really know what to think atm maybe PSU or possibly motherboard.

well why dont you read about how to put a cpu heatsink on?

you obviously have no idea what the thermal paste is for?

evry time you pull away the bond of the thermal paste from the cpu it is supposed to be cleaned then apply more!

what happens if you dont-pockets of air will develop and that means no thermal paste making contact to that part of the cpu so it wont be cooled, the pocket of air will however heat up!

the intel p4 and most newer cpu have a thermal shutdown, when the cpu reaches a certain temp it will crash to save the system!

it has happened to my old q6600 i sold to some one, it was water cooled and they never filled the resivour with coolant and switched it on-after 10mins it would shut down

what are you using to test your tempretures?

try real temp
