Compaq repair using partitioned drive

Hi all. I've been trying to get help all over the internet but to no avail. Perhaps the experts here have some good advice.

I use Windows XP media edition on a Compaq Presario SC1750NX.

During malware removal my computer got trashed. When I attempt to start up I receive a message that I am missing a .dll and can't boot windows. Using a windows cd to repair the missing .dll a list comes up asking me which version of windows to use. However, my C:\ drive is not listed, only the I:\ drive, which is the partitioned drive with the recovery files. Attempting to fix the .dll using that drive failed.

I do not have recovery discs. I have learned that many Compaq's with partitioned recovery drives do not come with discs.

Not sure if it matters, but my BIOS still sees the c:\ and I:\ drives, so thats good news, but says something about incorrect formatting.

Any advice would be great!

Thanks!

So, you have a Windows XP CD, but it's not the Recovery CD for your system? (Did I read that right?) How exactly did you try to fix the issue? Have you tried...:http://askbobrankin.com/fix_mbr.html

Yes, that is correct. I have Windows XP Pro from my old computer, but not the recovery disc from my new computer (many Compaq's with partitioned drives used for recovery do NOT come with recovery discs).

I used the repair utility on the Windows XP cd. The is a command, expand, that is used to replace missing .dll folders from the command promt. However, the utility asks which version of windows you would like to repair. My windows root directory is on the c:\ drive, which is not listed in the utility. Only the i:\ drive is, which only holds system recovery information.

The expand command attempts to replace missing .dll files directly to the windows root directory.

I have not tried that site yet, but will now. Thanks

i dont know if this helps or not but when you are in the recovery console the typing bootcfg /scan or /list shows your drives containing the operationg systems. then you might use the expand command just maybe...
