Cleaning Up the XP

I am in the process of updating my brother's computer with some new hardware, and i wanted to start the OS over from scratch. There are so many programs and hidden files on that computer that i really don't know where to begin. What i would like to know is; is there any way for me to wipe the OS clean without having to reinstall the entire system (i don't have the old OS disk, or i'd just do that).

Thanks.

Does not work. uninstall everything and much still lingers. my suggestion is killdisk and be done with it.

Um no not that i can think off unless you wanted to go and manually delete everything good idea for a program thou

(Starts thinking)

try uninstalling all non essential programs and take it from there. you can download ccleaner at ccleaner.com and clean the registery. do a defrag. thats about it. might as well get all the critical and security updates for windows. www.update.microsoft.com

you could also go through program files and delete all occurrences of anything you uninstalled.

What is the brand name of your computer and model? Maybe you can request the restore CD'S from the manufacturer. That would be the easiest and most productive way of going on this issue. You can also do what Tremmor suggested and use CCleaner and clean up your computer and your registry. Other things you can do is go into MSCONFIG from run and disable any Services running that are not Microsoft or Hardware related. If you have Your CD key from Microsoft i am pretty sure you could download a backup copy of windows from your favorite torrent site. If you dont know your Cd key you can click on this site to recover it : http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/product_cd_key_viewer.html . Hope that helped, let me know if it worked for you, thanks!

Thanks. I already have, use, and love CCleaner, i was just wondering if there was any way to start over from the start without the disks, but i guess not. I'll see if i can find something to do.

Thanks for the help though.

Yeah, I was gonna recommend CCleaner... that thing can save dying computers at the last moment. I was working on someones computer once and it was running ridiculously slow and he wanted me to speed it up... it was XP, with a P4, and 256MB RAM, and it should of been running much faster than it was... no matter what I did it wouldn't speed up. Then I ran CCleaner and it fixed 2000 some bad keys in the registry and started running very nicely after that. :P
