Choosing a good power supply

I'm going to be upgrading to a SOLTEK SL-XP865G-3IG socket 478 motherboard. Here are the spec’s that I’m going to put in this motherboard:

Intel Pentium 4 3.2GHz w/ Hyper Threading: Cache L1/12K+16K; L2/1MB
Ultra PC3200 1GB memory module
160GB WD (or Maxtor) Hard Drive
Video card undecided

I wanted some suggestions on the power supply. I was thinking about going with a Rosewill RV500S-2 ATX 2.01 500W Power Supply with dual 12V rails (+12V1_18A +12V2_16A).
 
Don't overlook the power supply. Cheap ones often are low quality and have weak safety features. If a cheap power supply overloads or dies, chances are, its going to take your whole PC with it.

Try looking for reviews on the power supply to see how good it really is.
 
can anyone say antec 550W? sorry i don't have a link to it right know but it is the best brand of psu's on the market and it well last you a long time. but they do cost alot but in the end it jsut might save you money.

Which Antec 550W are you talking about? In any case, it's overkill for a system like that

Not sure I agree with you there - Antec are great, but other companies make some better PSUs, depending on what price-range your'e looking at.
 
Okay, then here's what I'm thinking about going with, ASPIRE ATX-CW500WP4 ATX 500W Power Supply. It has good reviews, 500 watt for future updates, dual rails, 2 fans, 20+4-Pin power connector (motherboard type), and is with in my $20 to $50 range.

All I'm going to be powering is the motherboard, a high end video card, one case fan, 3 ISA cards, one LG DVD-ROM, one CD Burner, and the hard drive.

So, what do you think?

For the price this is a very nice power supply.

I'm going to see if I can buy all the parts by tomorrow but I have last question. Will a PCMCIS 350-Watt power supply work with my setup? The reason I'm asking this is because I bought this power supply back in December. My original idea was to do a powerleap update to my motherboard but that changed..
 
No, that power supply would not power your components, since it only has 15A on the 12V. The power supply you were looking at before was a lot better, since it had more than twice the amount of combined amps on the 12V rails.

Is there any reason you're going with socket 478?
First off, LGA775 is the most recent Intel socket, and PCI express is a lot newer than AGP. Spending that much money on old technology looks like a waste of money.
