Browser Hijacking and Generic Host Problems

I just restarted again. I didn't get the generic host needs to shutdown message (usually this pops up about 4-5 times), but I still had to use "shutdown -a" to stop NT/Authority from shutting down my system.

There is the link from VirusTotal.

I'll let it be known that I'm using NotePad2, and have been using it for about 2 years now with no problem. If it is a Trojan, most likely it is a recent infection due to the "Internet Security 2010" thing that I got somehow. I was able to remove that, but I still have a few residuals like the popups, search redirects, and NT Authority shutting down my system.

I don't think you uploaded the correct file. It should have been c:\windows\notepad.exe not notepad2.exe

Try kaspersky internet security and apply the 30 Days trial, update him and run a full scan.
Hope that helps

I DID upload notepad.exe. I replaces notepad.exe with notepad2 two years ago. I was just stating that since it's possible that ComboFix doesn't like Notepad2 and may have thought that it was something wrong.

I have a problem. Anything that uses an .MSI or Windows Installer to install will not work (I think it has something to do with me having to use "shutdown -a".

Try to repair your windows installer with this info from Microsoft:

# Log on to your computer as an administrator.
# Click Start, and then click Run.
# In the Open box, type cmd, and then click OK.
# At the command prompt, type msiexec.exe /unregister, and then press ENTER.
# Type msiexec /regserver, and then press ENTER.
# Verify that the SYSTEM account has full control access permissions to the HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT hive in the Windows registry. In some cases, you may also have to add Administrator accounts. To do so:Important This section, method, or task contains steps that tell you how to modify the registry. However, serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly. Therefore, make sure that you follow these steps carefully.:
#

1. Click Start, click Run, type regedit in the Open box, and then click Enter.
2. Click the following registry hive:
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT
3. On the Edit menu, click Permissions.
4. If SYSTEM is not listed in the Group or user names list, click Add, make sure that the local computer name appears in the From this location box, type system in the Enter the object names to select box, click Check Names, and then click OK.
5. Click SYSTEM in the Group or user names list, and then select the Full Control check box under Allow in the Permissions for SYSTEM box.
6. Click Apply, click OK, and then quit Registry Editor.

# Restart the computer. If the problem is not resolved, repair Windows
