just want to know is defragging any good or just a waste off time does it actually bring your computer performance up if yes wants the best software to do this ?

I hate to say but smartdefrab is the best. All the others lack features or charge. Even the charge do less.

We can argue if pink is better than red but not if smartdfrag is better. It is.

I was just baiting you into admitting it was just a personal preference.

I quit mentioning what I use long ago as everyone always claimed theirs is better.

Personally I use a mix of three, not to start a flame war as technically, all defraggers are the same, but whatever.

The windows defragger:
Not the start > system > tools > defrag. I'm talking the "idle defragger" the windows tool (dfrgntfs.exe) that comes on when your system is idle (eg, leaving your computer on overnight) does a good enough job for me. No download no install no running, just idle :D!

Defraggler:
Basically I install this tool when someone asks me to. Its better than the windows defragger (it moves boot files), but it's nothing amazing.

JK defrag (now renamed):
Single exe that you double click and it starts on its own (no install). (You can change some start options, but there is no point). It is the fastest defragger I've used yet and is open source! Can't be beat.

:P

just dwnloaded smartdefrag its defrag know let see how it goes

am i meant to just defram local disk as recovery has teh os windows vista installed in ?

Of all the payware file utilities, PerfectDisk Pro by Raxco is the best value imo. I've tried most of the free defragging programs which work OK. Some are annoying or don't do quite what you want. I've found PD to always work as advertised, flexible, easy to use, works with almost no free space, does many things you did not think of. As an example, if I'm about to put files from one or two folders on dvd, I can get a list of broken files in those folders and defrag just those. Saves doing the whole drive.

Defragging is not entirely for faster performance. Contiguous files are easier to recover in case of HDD failure.

XPS are you the most impressionable poster on the Internet?

OK SmartDefrag is the best because of the level it goes to, It's speed, and scheduling.

I guess if none of that matters sure have a love fest with the others.

what you mean impressionable why you taking things so seriously ? where all friends here dont get angry once i start mouthing off gjeeeeeeeeeeeez

Gotta agree with Nanobyte. I downloaded every trial version of defraggers that I could find a few years ago; and at that time Perfect Disk 7 was the best of the lot. I am now using Perfect Disk 10.
