well apple surpassed microsoft as the most valuable technology company (and is now second to exxon for most valuable company in america):

some people on here (including myself) have bashed apple in some way (jokingly for the most part). it is hard to think that apple at one point was about to shutter its windows... but i was thinking today that, without apple, where would microsoft be? as much as people dislike apple they are really essential to the technology world. would we even have windows 7 or would we be dealing with vista still? anyone else feel the same way?

i will admit that i wish microsoft were top dog, although i am not really sure they deserve to be right now...

The people running the show at Apple are absolute geniuses. They are the only tech company around making exactly what the market wants. Not trying to make the market want something. The combination of design and marketing has made Apple what it is. This is the end of the Microsoft era. Now it's Apple and Google's turn.

I think both companies really need the other to survive. Without the competition, their products just don't progress.

Yet you'll pay hundreds of dollars in overpriced software like Windows and Office???

i could pay 200 dollars for my windows 7 and build an pc, that has everything i want and still be cheaper than buying a mac.

I just re read my previous post, ill stick with ms for the computer related shit, but as far like mp3 players apple has taken that over, and my iphone is pretty nice.

Ipad is just worthless in my opinion though

No, Apple marketed something people already had but in a 'cool' package. The market wants it because Apple marketed it very well and their product is perceived as the cool choice.

One word; Technet.

Ends up being infinitely cheaper than Apples "overpriced" software.

LMAO, this is so far from even being nearly true. You know volume licenses require a minimum. Apple offers similar volume licensing and if you want to compare actual license costs....

Hmmm

OS X $99 - $129
Windows 7 ultimate - $180 - $200 OEM
OS X Server Unlimited client $499
MS Windows Server, Small business $1,000 (has client limits on it)

Your average person can't just sign up for a technet or MSDN account. Apple works really hard at the end user experience and people like having everything work out of the box when they buy a computer. In fact, Jobs said a while back they were no longer going to do the Mac Vs PC commercials because he says people need to understand that for us to succeed Microsoft doesn't have to fail.

Kick ass, I'm above average then.

And it took them HOW long to figure that out? 3 years of annoying garbage if you ask me.

100$ for Windows and 0$ for OpenOffice.

Oh, yah, because no one likes games and compatibility and everybody needs an annoying taskbar on the bottom and inconveniently sorted programs.

Gaming is a niche market, most people don't want to play games. Compatibility is a moot argument.

Well, lets not get ahead of ourselves here :P:D

No, that was always their philosophy, they were always battling against the stigmas of Macs. Like they aren't compatible, they are over priced, so on and so forth. They used that to make people aware of their presence in the market and it worked.

I still think they were annoying garbage.

What item that's not made just for Apple is not compatible with Windows?
As for gaming... it seems most people don't want to play games because they think they need to buy a 'gaming computer'.

well you know what they say, opinion are like ***holes, everyone has one and they stink! :P I admit some of the Apple commercials were lame, but some were pretty damn funny. The one with the secret service guy was hilarious.

80% of users just want word processing, music, movies and email. That is what I am getting at.

This is also based on stock price and market capitalization, not true market share. I'm not hating on either party, as I'm a user of both Windows and Apple software, but I'd argue that Apple stock is in a bubble. To be the company #2 in the world -- in front of Wal Mart, for example -- this phenomenon will be corrected some time in the future.

They have a brilliant business model though.
