Computer troubleshooting needed! Hard drive runs all the time.

Hello!

I have an interesting thing going on and I am not sure what it is. The hard drive runs all the time and after a while the computer gets really slow. Is it a hard drive buffer issue, hard drive in general or memory issues?

1. Disable any unnecessary programs from running at bootup
2. Download Ccleaner and do a custom clean
3. Download Malwarebytes and scan your pc for malware, have it quarantine anything it finds

How old is this computer?

click on the processes tab, click on the disk column so that it sorts it by highest usage first, take a screenshot and post it so we can see whats using the disk.

I will look at all this and be back in a couple of days. Going to be away from the computer for a couple of days. Thanks for the info.

Computer is about 4-5 years old. It also will not upgrade to Win11. Needs something of i am not sure of yet.

How do I disable programs at startup?

Thanks,
Kevin

I'd figure out what's sending that traffic out, that's not like 'usual' unless you're syncing in the background at a low rate.

I'm sure a mechanical drive for an OS is an immensely slow experience in 2025

I agree with beers.... you have a couple of things that may be (or all) the cause:

If this is the original drive, then your mechanical (7200RPM) drive may be starting to show its age. If your board can handle them, consider using a NvME drive for your boot drive / applications and a mechanical drive for your data storage.

The sending of data on your wifi does appear to be a lot for something that should be idle. P2P software would be the most likely cause, however it could be also GoogleDrive trying to sync but cant because you do not have the space (I assume you are on a free account?). GoogleDrive also includes your email storage as well.

Try quitting out of GoogleDrive to ensure it's not running and see if that makes a difference in the sending data. If it does not, then try a Clean Boot to see if that helps.

Microsoft - How to do a clean boot

Here is what I have done so far.
1. Downloaded and ran CCleaner
2. Downloaded and ran Malware bytes
3. got rid of Google drive on my computer.
So with doing all that so far it boots faster, runs faster and hard drive doesn't seem to run all the time.

How can I do a do a complete copy of my hard drive and put it on a MvME or an SSD?

You use software to clone it. However it might be a good idea to do a fresh install of windows since you were having issues. Ideally every few years you should do a clean install to get rid of all the bugs.

How about the networking portion?
