My Complete Gaming Build

Okay, so I'm starting this over. I'm calling this my complete build because I'm coming from a Laptop, so I'm needing quite a bit. I'm currently using an Asus G1 in case you're interested.

I've talked to my neighbor who works for apple and he would be more than willing to build this PC with me. So I've decided I'm going to try and find what I want in my ultimate gaming PC. :D

So now I need your critique of what I've got listed and tell me what I'm missing or what else I should be considering. I'm also making this list here for my own quick reference as I go over this list with people I trust about which components I should buy. It's easy to link them to this thread and have them check things out.

This is my hard earned money and I don't want to waste it. Even though I know things seem to change every six months, I want to future proof my system as much as possible. So please give me your imput and let me know what I'm missing. I have a feeling one of those components will be the addition of more cooling fans for this machine.

If you want to save some money you could get the Intel Core i7 920 and overclock it

I was just looking at that. It looks as though people are overclocking them to 3.8GHz and still getting stable performance. That's quick! I've seen some at 4GHz, but it looks like they lose their stability at that level. I'm wondering what the capabilities of the 960 will be...

My big concern is that I don't create a chokepoint in this system. If that makes any sense...

Because I'm definitely going with a heavy hitting Video Card...

Made some modifications to the list.

First, I changed our the I7-960 for a I7-920. I realized I can easily overclock the 920 to 3.8ghz and outperform the 960 for lot less money. With that additional savings I bought the following.

I took out the 1Tb 7200rpm primary HD. I replaced it with a 64GB SATA II Internal Solid state disk to run my OS and some of other programs.

I then added a 640GB 7200 RPM 32MB Cache SATA secondary HD to store everything else.

I also changed out the memory in favor of faster, cheaper RAM.

I think this is a smart move.

Save your money, get a 920. :good:

A 5970? Those things cost as much as an entire computer.. But you'll definetly be surprised from the performance of it. Make sure to raise its clocks speeds though.

Since it's such a big card, wouldn't you be better off going for a Full-Tower chassis instead of a Mid-Tower?

I approve of everything except the cooler. There are plenty of other options--namely, the Thermalright TRUE. You're going to want the extra cooling if you're going to overclock--it would be a shame to be limited on a system like that by your processor temperature.

Any recommendations? This list is changing quite a bit. Mostly for the better! I'm updating as things change! :good:

I wasn't able to find that on newegg, but I was able to find it from other dealers. Does $60-70 sound about right?

That sounds right--you'll need fans as well. The best thing to do about that is track down bomberboysk--he knows lots about fans!

Also, pick up some of his thermal paste he's selling--for $7 shipped, it's a steal, and it's the best stuff out there!

Thanks for the heads up on that! Before I find what fans I need, I think I need to decide on a case. I've been getting really mixed feedback about this area. If I could keep this cost around $100, would be ideal. Because it looks like I'm going to have to buy multiple more fans as well. That video card is going to take A LOT of space! :P

The HAF 932 is enormous, and imo the 922 is really not worth it. It's smaller/cheaper but I'd definetly pay more for the 932.

The card should be able to fit in the 690 like Boddaggit said but with such a powerful build I'd put it in a nice big box to show off :D

Have you seen any overheating issues with your overclocked 920 in that case with the V8? Just curious because I plan on going about the same route with overclocking. I'm hoping I might be able to get to around 3.8ghz with stable performance.

You'll have no heat issues with any of the three Coolermaster cases listed above with the V8 @ 3.8Ghz.
