I have some Windows XP home laptops i want to put on the network connecting to a school domain running windows 2003.

I have them connected but they are only seeing the common folder.

There is 2 main login staff and pupils and i want work out how to get the laptops to see these folders, also can not see networked printers.

I sure there must be a way round this, but i cant work it out.

cheers

What type of network is it? Is it a domain, workgroup? The problem with XP home is that it is not designed to work inside of a network. Do you have any other Home versions of XP that are on the network? If so, how did you get them on? I'm pretty sure you cannot put home on a domain. I believe that you can put them in a Workgroup, but once again have never tried that. You should have bought Professional not home. Professional is made to work on a Network, while Home is normally used as stated, at home. Hope this helps.

That the thing, im taking over a network (I dont have much knowledge about networking :D ) at a school

We have a ICT room and class rooms running XP pro and Windows 98.

These both connect to the domain server running windows 2003.

All the staff have Laptops that have never been on the network before and im looking into getting them wireless connection soon.

But the dippy bloke who built the network ordered a load of home edition laptops.

Got them connected to the server and to connect to the internet from what i can remember i just entered the domain name into the workgroup and it found the network.

But i could not log into the network and access files.

Looks like i will have to upgrade as many as my budget will stretch to

Cheers Guys
