looking for anything to pair with a 2.8ghz pentium d and 2gb of ram, so a 3850, 3870, 4650, its all game. i only ask that it has ddr3 at least and must be under $80

well the 8600GTS has 512mb and my 8600gt had 256mb. It didn't do too well :(

well, I did it, lol. i played some games on mid-high setting too, and yes, i mean the new ones :) the 8600gts is definitly better than the 8600gt.

EDIT: wait, I get it now.

The gts is a good but better, but not great. The 512mb will help too.

I had an 8600gts 256mb, would play COD WAW fine at 1600x900 or less resolution. But 1680x1050 was choked and had lag only 20 FPS. This was overclocked as well, so probably on stock clocks it would be 1440x900 would be OK. I had about 40 FPS at 1600x900. But with 512mb, it would probably be a little better yet.

Also, I think an 8600gts 512mb would probably be about in the same league as far as games that a pentium D could play anyway.

I actaully thought it parred up pretty good with my old CPU, the AMD Athlon 64 X2 5200+.

Anyway, lovely, if you want it, you can have it for $35 shipped, as soon as I get it from my bro. let me know :)

the 4650 and 8600gts are pretty different, in cod4 at least they get around 30fps difference

First of all, apparently you only looked at 1024x768 resolution. At every other resolution tested it's 5-15fps better.

Secondly, and obviously, one game does not give accurate results on comparison's.

The closest thing I found was a 4670 VS an 8600gts with several games tested at 1920x1200 resolution. The 4670 was consistantly 15 FPS better, BUT of course we know that a 4670 is a decent bit better than a 4650. Just guessing, but on average at normal resolution's people game at you'd probably see an average of 3-8 FPS better performance with a 4650 over an 8600gts.

I'm not real sure about overclockability either, because my 8600gts I had clocked a ton over stock....and I have a 3650 that for some reason it won't let me overclock at all. ATI overdrive is at max, I can turn it down but not up. This would play a large factor if the 4650 was not overclockable like the 3650.

i'll rephrase. its about 20-30% better in most of the tests.

No I don't care, it's just hard to find an accurate comparison between the two cards. Not that many people take the time to bench/test the lower-mid range cards.
