Wireless speed help?????

Hi guys,
How can I boost my wireless speed from my computer to the wireless router can I change my speed from 54 Mbs to something above the 54 Mbs???

There are a few sub-standards faster than 802.11g, but most of them make no real difference in performace, particularly unless you have all the correct hardware. If you really want a difference, you need to look into 802.11n which hasn't been out too long. However I can't find too many devices that use it, so you may want to hold off until it's more standard.

I don't think there is any 802.11n hardware out there yet. You can get "Pre-N" 108 Mbps routers and adapters but they don't use the finalised standard and it might change.

However, even with 108 Mbps hardware, you're unlikely to be able to reach that speed unless you're very close with no walls.

If you want to transfer a lot of data quickly, wireless isn't the perfect solution at the moment I'm afraid.

I saw some things on Newegg that I thought were 802.11n. On wiki it said 802.11n was suppose to be out by April this year... Also "N" is suppose to be 300Mbps, not just 108Mbps

Oops, I was confusing 802.11n with Atheros' proprietary Super G, which is 108 Mbps. According to Wikipedia, 802.11n will be 540 Mbps max. The typical data rate is usually half the max though, so around about 200 Mbps.

802.11n has been delayed until April 2008.

What I saw was saying "N" was only capable of 300. In a chart it said it was due this year, and some other standard, apparently, was coming out later on... However, I was just waking up when I researched it, so I probably overlooked something.

Either way, wireless isn't the way to go for speed. If you want the most performace, go wired if at all possible.

Heh, no problem. I wasn't entirely sure of the new standard myself, I didn't know it was going to be 540 Mbps. :)

I agree. Wireless still isn't a perfect technology yet so perhaps the OP would be better off investing in gigabit ethernet rather than waiting for the new wireless standard.

You can boost your signal ( in mW) to make the connection stronger and more reliable with the right firmware loaded on your router.

Check out:

http://www.dd-wrt.com

By default most routers only pump out a measily 28mW signal. I have boosted my signal up to 75mW, and get great connections through out my whole apartment building.

The Pre-N and the "N" are both using MIMO (Multi-In - Multi-Out) by using two diffrent channels to boost bandwith.

Yes there was something called "Pre-N" that was back in April and ran at 108Mb/s.

The N is and has been here for a wile now.

It is still has a hefty price. $185/£100 for a PCI card.

It is not quite ready, there are alot of dead spots and the speed within a shot distance are poor but over 15 feet it is amazing.
