What do I need to do to secure my wireless network? I've heard about encryption and also about hiding my connection from others. How do I turn these features on?
First of all you need to find out what type of encryption your router uses: WPA, WEP etc. You can do this by opening your web browser and typing in your default gateway that can be found by entering "ipconfig" in to command prompt. After you enter your username and password and access your router, you can find out what type of encryption it supports. So for WEP you select your encryption level (i think the higher the level the safer but the lower the level the faster) and enter the password/code you want to use. Remember it and then go to the wireless options of each computer/laptop you want to access the internet through, and type in the pasword/code and encryption level.
Well...at least i thinks thats how you do it
If i'm completely wrong, someone please correct me
Also, if you don't know your username and password, i find it tends to be:
Username: adminstrator
Password: 1234
{or}
Username: admin
Password: admin
It should be something like that unless you've changed it yourself
If you only have WEP, check for a firmware upgrade or just get a new router. WEP can be cracked in literally 15 minutes, you really do need WPA to be completely safe. WPA with a nice long and random keyphrase (use GRC's generator) will make you pretty uncrackable.
