Hi does anybody have tips for incresing wireless range?
I purchased a router today but found that it doesnt reach to where i want.

Any ideas

Thanks,

Barry

What's your router model?

A select few allow for external antennas to be attached, which are often a lot more powerful that those built into the the router.

Also, the router antennas are almost always omnidirectional, meaning a lot of the power is used up in sending a signal in the opposite direction to what you want. You can sometimes replace the antenna with one that isn't omnidirectional, meaning you get more of the power directed where you need it.

One of the easiest ways would be to add a repeater to your network, positioned between the two points you want to have communicate. The reapeater basically relays the signal it receives.

By the way, welcome to the forum!

You could invest in a new antenna or two. Or even a better card for your computer. I know one of our external cards is much more powerful than anything else we have here.

Thanks Magicman.
Its a Belkin Wireless G+ Mimo Router f5D9230-4.
Im trying to get it upstairs. am i being to ambitious?

How much are the relayers?
I am also using my Laptops wireless card would using a usb be more effective
An thanks again for the help im a bit clueless to be honest.

Trying to get it through the ceiling to an adjecent room shouldn't be an issue for the router at all. I would suggest exhausting any other problems before investing in a repeater or buying anything else to that matter. A repeater won't do much good if there's a blocked signal somewhere. It only comes into play when there's a massive gulf to fill - I'm talking many meters. Just so you have an idea of price, Belkin (who I'd suggest you go with for maximum compatibility with your current hardware) does one here.

Try and position the router away from anything metallic, and try and get the line of "sight" between router and laptop to be as unobstructed as possible. Switching channels could be useful if there's some interference from somewhere. Regarding your laptop, the built in Wi-Fi should be ample to support a signal 10m away, and I doubt it's that far we're talking. I don't have much experience with USB Wi-Fi sticks, but I can't imagine them being more powerful that the laptop's built in capabilities. I don't think that's the problem at all.

sorry for the double post but what do ou think is more importantfot the range the card on the computer or the router

it is sort of in the room furthest away from the computer room.would be close enough to 10m and through 4+ walls maybe. tried the channels got a faint signal on one. Will try play around wih it tomorrow and raise it. Fingers crossed:)

Okay, good luck and let us know if you need any more help. By the way, for future reference, you can edit posts to add information by clicking the Edit button at the bottom of each post. It helps prevent double posting.

Again thanks,

Should have seen that Button:)

Will let you know how i get on. One last question though sorry. Do you feel the belkin is a good models or others such as the Linesky(sp) better for range

i ahve problems with the range on my network, mainly because i think i am on the limit of my G router and card

Just invested in a Rangemax router which has helped a bit but i am picking up a netgear draft N pci card tomorrow which should give me a much improved connection :)
