wireless problem

:( i have my desktop pc,im using a linksys wrt54gs wireless router and a toshiba satellite 45-m laptop. heres my problem... every once in awhile the signal will drop from 54bps to sometimes 48,36, sometimes even 1.0bps and this happens when my laptop is not even a foot away from the router. what can be causing this????
 
possibly your phone interfereing, the card is 2.4GHZ, right? and do you have a cordles phone with the same? 2.4GHZ..
 
yes i am using a 2.4 ghz cordless phone. but the phone itsself is located in the next room. can that have an effect as well on the signal strengh??
