Wireless Networking

I want to set up a secure wireless network with 5 or 6 computers. Also I would like my computer to have the wireless router (be the main computer with the internet) but my computer is upstairs and the port in which the internet comes from in the wall is all the way downstairs... what would I need to buy/do to make a wireless network, have my computer be the main computer, and have the main feed from downstairs come upstairs into my computer? Anything will help...

When you say you would like your computer to be the main computer, do you mean you would have to have your computer on all the time for the internet to work on any other machines? (thats what you are trying to do). I think it would be easier just to plug it into the downstairs port, and set the password which only you know.

Whats the reason you want to be the main computer on the lan?

Who is your provider? They will install a new cable drop for you, and if its DSL it just needs to use your phone line.

Then you can wire the modem + router to your computer and have it broadcast the wifi signal through out your location.

You don't have to be next to the AP to be the main computer, although you should be able to wire to it if necessary.

I would install a wireless router next to your modem, and install wireless NIC's in all your machines that need them. You can log into the router over the WLAN and change settings, ect.
