wireless networking: laptop vs. desktop

I have been a long time laptop user, with wireless internet capability, and a wireless router at home. I have recently purchased a desktop. Because the location of my desktop is too far from a phone jack or my router, when I ordered the computer I asked to have an internal wireless adapter installed with my system. My problem is: while I can get SUPERB signal strength with my laptop anywhere in the house , I am getting the worst signal with my desktop. I have to have my desktop literally 3-4 feet from the wireless router, and even then I would still only get a weak signal, with one "bar".
(which obviously makes the wireless adaptor a complete waste if my computer is so close to the router!)

Is this pretty common with wireless networking with desktop? I've asked a lot of people and no one was able to help me because their desktops are all close to a phone jack, so no one I know has the need for wireless.

Thanks,
Dan

Same here my Dell laptop picks up my WI-FI signal much better than my desktop, I have a belkin network card with my desktop. The next router I will buy will be have MIMO technology which has a greater range but for now I can get by with my currents setups. For the record I have tried a USB adaptor which out performed my current network card but only because the fron of my computer was in a more clearer position then then atenna at the back.
