Wireless Network Problems

Just bought a wireless bt voyager 2091 router from ebay to find that it is locked to BT Broadband. I have set up the router step by step through the setup cd. This involved linking the router to the pc via ethernet cable (to test it) and the modem cable from the router to the phone socket (with filter).

At this stage after all the hardware and software is installed should the light marked 'internet' (on the router) be light up because it currently isn't.

If i unlock the modem for use with other ISP's should this light up or am i missing something?

Come on please, just a bit of help!!!

Should i even need to plug my modem into the router, because the voyager 2091 is a modem/router anyway isn't it?
I should just be able to attch the ethernet from pc to router and a phone type cable from the router to the phone socket and the internet should be active shouldn't it?
