Wireless Net Opinion

hey guys,

i just wanted everyones opinion on something. i have a laptop with broadband internet and am thinking about getting a wireless router and card for my lappy. do you all think this is just a waste of money considering i dont have multiple computers? i have one of the new ps2's with the network adapter built in, and i could use that as my excuse(my girlfriend doesnt think this is a good idea) but i dont really play many games online, but i might if i get madden 06. thanks for all the input.

I like it myself, I originally only had one computer and when i got the second I choose wireless. I guess really because it a practical option with having 2 computers, also I was having to run rj-11 cables all the way up the stairs :)

I would stick with wires if I was you if your happy to use your lappy near the socket, the beauty of wireless is that you can use you lappy all round the house (signal permittin) so If you find yourself using it all round the house then I would look into wireless, but that said I wouldnt invest to much money into it if that was my only benifit.

Mike

P.s. just bribe your girl with something, take her shopping and build a trip to the computer store into her shopping trip :)

But the ps2 uses a cat5 right? i dont think it is wireless...

the router i want has wireless and 4 LAN ports. that is what i meant about the ps2.

Ok I *guess it would be useful IF your PS2 is very close to your router (walljack for phone).. and your computer which will have wireless is far away, meaning the cord would be a hassle and get in the way. You may be able to get away with it...

I have broadband, why would you ask? I think that in replying to a wireless/broadband related thread you would maybe grasp that I had and was reffering to broadband or DSL, also dont hold you finger down to long on the '?' button, one '?' will surfice :)

Thats a good router, linksys get good vibes from users as far as I can gather. One thing I know about that router is it dosent have a USB input so If your current modem does have a USB output it wont work without an adaptor of some sort, the reason I post this info is because of your british or even english I got supplied a USB modem from AOL and that is a USB modem and I think wouldnt immediatly work with your setup providing you have a USB modem.

It may be better to buy a modem/router and to answer your question on the 'outside your house' query then the answer is yes it should be fine, I think you could look at chepaer modems than linksys for what you are looking for.

try http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/SAFECOM-ADSL-MODEM-ROUTER-4-PORT-USB-33-90-Inc-UK_W0QQitemZ5818051597QQcategoryZ101270QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

I have personally used safecom modems and had no porblems, If you all your needs are connecting at 15-20 foot then buy this modem or another low budget one, I have played online games with no real problems.

Hope this helps, I personally feel wireless is the future and not just a gimmick, but I also feel its better suited for use with more than one computer, just dont go spending more money to get what you all ready have :)

Hope this helps

p.s. you can probably find the same modem/router in other countries just google the product code

i must have forgotten to mention that i have cable internet and not dsl(i think the modem you showed to me was a dsl). also, my girlfriend might get a computer sometime in the near future so i think i might go for the router now so i can be prepared. thanks again.

and if anyone has the answers to my previous questions i really appreciate it. thanx
