Wireless Internet/Network

I have a question about wireless internet/networking. I am about to purchase a laptop which will have an internal wireless card but since I don’t have any experience with this, I’m not sure how to connect it to the rest of my network….hope someone can help with this – here’s the details of my network:

PC 1 – Running WXP, router (not wireless) is connected, high-speed cable internet plugged into the router
PC2 – Running WME, hard wired into the router
PC3 – Running W98, hard wired into the router

I can see all 3 PC’s from any PC in the network and they all share the same cable internet connection. I would like to a) be able to connect the laptop into the network so I can see all 4 PC’s from any PC and b) use the internet on the laptop in a different room (wireless). Since there are no slots left on the router, I imagine I would need to purchase another one with additional slots. Does this have to be a special type so that it works with the laptop and the rest of the wired network? I wouldn’t have a problem disconnecting PC 3 from the network and using that slot for the Laptop, if it will work….basically, I need someone to explain to me how I can get all this to work and what type of additional hardware I’ll need to purchase.

Thanks in advance….

Debbie

well if your router is a wireless one depending on which signal ur router and laptop run on, windows usually takes care of all the hassle. Once you have your laptop you just go to your control panel and go to network connections and hit new connection blah blah and t hats if windows doesnt already start the wizrd for you, but ya check the signals that your router and laptop run on (802.11b, WiFi etc.)

Thanks for your reply but the router is not wireless - it's plugged into PC 1 which is why i wonder if the laptop would work on it. I got my network set-up with some help from the forum and a LOT of luck - i really don't know very much, especially when it comes to wireless and laptops....

Im confused on how you have this set up. But, it should be like this...

If you don't have a wireless router, you cant do wireless!! I suggest that you go buy one. They aren't very expensive.

If you don't buy one though, you will have to plug the laptop in to the router like one of the PC's shown in my picture. If the laptop doesnt have an ethernet card (which it probably does) then you will HAVE to get a wirless router, or some kind of adapter card.

it really should be as simple as setting up a new connection on your laptop. if the wrieless works, it should already be getting a signal.

ADSL & DSL router !!!

I recently bought a laptop with wireless laptop card in it. You HAVE TO HAVE wireless router in order to receive single to your laptop, wirelessly.

I bought wireless D-Link router for £50. Go for D-link, Linksys, NetGear or Belkin, all quite reliable. All of them provides technical support, so if you can't do set-up yourself, just give them a buzz.

By the way, you need to bear in mind that there are 2 routers you could get i.e. DSL & ADSL.

DSL router needs to get connected through your telephone socket & ALSO with the cable modem, so FIRST Ethernet cable will connect with base unit to the router & SECOND Ethernet cable will connect with router with cable modem box. Bear in mind that you'll ONLY get just one Ethernet cable as a part of your wireless router, so you'll need to buy another Ethernet cable costing less than £2.

ADSL router have BUILT-IN modem & it gets connected with your telephone socket.

Now, you need to ask your Internet provider whether they support ADSL based broadband connection OR DSL. Some companies ONLY support DSL (& hence asking you to continue using their cable modem by connecting it with router, etc.) & some companies ONLY provides ADSL broadband (& hence asking you to use their telephone line to connect, often using Microfilter, through which you can have one cable connecting at the back of your telephone & another to the ADSL).

Since the diagram is too big, use this link (http://www.bt.com/broadband/bb_info...1322&obsOID=-38443&obsType=LINK&obsNoSee=true) to see the way ADSL connection Internet, UNLESS, things are all together different in USA, since the figure below is how I've seen it working in Britain. Choose the VERY LAST, "Find out more" link at the bottom of the page, to see the pop-up coming showing the ADSL based Internet connection diagram.

If your ONLY telephone socket is downstair & your PC is upstair, then you'll have wire going all the way upstair from your telephone socket downstair to your router upstair, unless, you decide to keep your wireless router next to the telephone socket downstair, in which case, you will ALSO need "wireless adapter for your PC, as well", so it can receive signal, wirelessly from router downstair, just as similar to laptop receiving wireless signal from the same router.

Depending on WHETHER you're using Cable Modem, presently or any other means of getting connected to broadband Internet, you'll have to make your mind up whether to go with DSL or ADSL, again depending on whether it gets supported by your Internet service provider.

Assuming that you are using "Cable" modem to connect to Internet, if I were in your place, I would've gone with DSL router.
