Wireless Internet Connection on Laptop

This may seem like a dumb question, but I'll ask it anyway...

I have a laptop computer that I connect to the internet with a cable modem. If I am traveling, how can I connect to the internet away from my cable modem? Do I need to buy a wireless router? I would like to be able to wirelessly connect to the internet away from home without having to find a wi-fi hotspot. Is this possible? If so, how?

Thank you
