wireless g vs wireless n

Hi everyone,

I have a wireless n router, my wireless n card has just died so I bought a wireless g wireless card becuase they are cheaper.. I have noticed my signal strength is greatly improved and my speed is a bit faster.... does anyone find that odd?

Both devices were linksys


ps. My mom has wireless n on her laptop, much slower also

The draft-802.11n protocol is roughly double the speed of 802.11g. That the protocol allows for faster speeds does not mean that you will receive those speeds. Your bandwidth over a wireless signal is dependent upon many factors: Number of users connected, distance from source, interference and signal to noise ratio just to name a few.

Do all of your machines connecting to the Linksys wireless-N router have Linksys wireless-n hardware in them? There are known issues with certain wireless-N brands not working well with each other.

Also, wireless-n devices typically have better range and coverage than wireless-g IF you are using wireless-n. It sounds like the radio in your prior unit was dying anyway. This is not uncommon.

the had a usb linksys wireless n adapter... didnt seem to work well

to answer your question only one machine in our house now has wireless n.. the rest are G/b
 
USB WiFi adapters are touch and go. The point is to match vendors between Wireless-N devices. If you have a Linksys 802.11n router, get Linksys 802.11n adapters.

You will get the best performance for your devices if they all run wireless-n on a wireless-n router. If you have some that need b/g compatability, you would be better served with a wireless-g router. Many 802.11n routers are set to much lower radio transmission power than 802.11g. This can cause b/g devices on that router (when the router is supporting them) to work much less effectively than if they were connecting to a non-802.11n router.
 
I guess N is pretty pointless at the moment. Its way much faster than speed your getting in through your wall so you probably wont notice a difference from G to N, unless you have a magic internet over 54.
 
I am pretty sure if one of your computers are running G on the wireless N router, the rest of your computer gets capped at the Wireless G speed.
 
I have a linksys Wireless N router and I just love it. The N adapters that I have connect about 130mps wireless. Amazing. The N is good I think . Even on my G cards the signal improved greatly. I recommend any Linksys Wireless N router out there. They are amazing. Even if you dont have a N card, They are still great for a secure, fast, and reliable connection. I own 2 linksys wireless N routers and am very pleased with both of them. ..... ( off topic ) my next thing to tackle is switching to 1gb lines. But then id have to upgrade every card in each pc... that can run lots of $$, might be better just going wireless N on all pcs.

Technically the spec can handle up to 600Mbps. Most users and devices out now, however, will only see throughput in the 110-140Mbps range.
