I'm having wireless connection problem after I reformat my Compaq laptop. My laptop can't receive information from the Belkin Wireless Router and I can't surf the internet using my Compaq laptop. But the router works fine with my other laptop. Anyone can provide me solution to the above problem?

P.S. My Compaq laptop works fine with the router before I reformat it.

Can you access the other computers on your network from that laptop?

Can you ping the router?
Does the laptop "connect" to your wireless network?... does it see the network?
What secrutity method are you using on the wireless network... MAC Address filtering? WPA? etc etc.... also have you got DHCP enabled on the router?

Waoh! Never thought that it would be so complicated.

1. My network name is listed and I am able to connect to it. Just that I can't surf the internet with it.
2. DHCP is enabled.
3. I already disabled the security as I am not able to use the WiFi to surf the internet yet with my Compaq laptop. The other laptop works fine.
4. What does it mean by "ping the router"?

Lol... sorry if i scared you with those.

1. Good.
2. Good.
3. Sorry i dont quite understand that i'll have a shot.... A)Disable Norton Internet Security if you have it runnning. B) open Internet Explorer, then goto Tools/InternetOptions/Connections/LANSettings un-tick all boxes in this window, then reopen Internet explorer.

4. Ping.... is like on Submarine Movies where they ping the other boats. It send a message to the router(or whatever IP you enter) asking if the router is actualy there.
To do it, goto START/RUN then type in cmd and press enter. A DOS box will open. Type in ping XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX (where the X's represent the IP Address of your router) then press enter.... it should say something like Reply from 192.168.2.1 :bytes32 time=1ms TTL=64.
If it says "Request timed out" it means it cant see it.

The security for my Wireless Router had been disabled. It's one of my try to solve the problem. I first thought that there's problem between my laptop and the router's security (etc WEP, WPA, WPA-PSK). And now the security for my router is still disabled.

I followed your instruction to ping. Seems that there's no problem to ping the router.

Thanks for replying. :D
It's really getting frustrating due to the wireless connection problem :(

What security settings are being used on the other laptop? Have you tired setting everything the same on the Compaq as on the other laptop?

Erm....
The security is set on the router, not the computers. I've checked the configurations of the Wireless Network Connection on both laptops, they're the same.

Could it be something that blocks all the information sent to my Compaq laptop? Just a wild guess.

Only if MAC Address Filtering is enabled... but assuming you were previously able to connect using this laptop & router....and havent changed your WiFi card, there should be no prob with this.
Or, someone has changed the router configuration to now block some PORTS.... unlikely.

On your other laptop, Goto ControlPannel/NetworkConnections then right-click on Wireless Network Connection and select Properties.
Open the Wireless Networks tab.
Click once on your network in the Preferred Networks area.
Click on Properties.
Check that all of the settings in this window are the same on the Compaq... if not, then change the Compaq to match.

All settings on Compaq had set to match the other laptop. I've checked the MAC Filtering, there's no problem with it.
The problem still exist. :(

Hmmm... ok. try this.

Goto ControlPannel/NetworkConnections then right-click on Wireless Network Connection and select Properties.
Click on Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) in the "This connection uses the following items:" area.
Click on Properties.
Tick the box at bottom that says Use the following DNS server addresses:
In the Prefered DNS Server field, type in the address of you Router, then click Ok and restart the computer if asked to.
Close Internet Explorer then reopen it.

Also, preferably use either www.google.com or www.microsoft.com as addresses to test if the connection is working.

Dang... you got me stumped at the moment. i'll see what else i can remember and get back to you.

Hopefully anothe rmember will be able to help you out to.

check and see if the computer reconizes the network...repair the network connection...make shure the default gateway is the correct address...if that doesnt work try setting up a network connection.
