wireless adapter suggestions

Just wanted to give a heads up on my situation and see what you guys would recommend I go with....

I have a desktop that I build at school, but now I'm at home and my mom has a wireless network in the house because she didn't want wires running all over the place. My desktop does not have a wireless adapter and will be in the basement and the router is upstairs. I need something with good signal strength. Also, portability will be another issue because I am getting a laptop that I will be using for work and would prefer a USB adapter to carry around and find hotspots. I know some adapters have wifi hotspot locators, so this would be another plus. I would like to spend under $50 on this. Just wanted to see what you guys suggest. Thanks!!

Well after reading many reviews, I picked up the Netgear WG111 USB wireless network adapter. I would highly recommend this product. I've dealt with a number of wireless products, and this thing is 100% simplified. Literally installed the drivers/software from the cd. Plugged it in, and I had internet. Took me no longer than 5 minutes from opening the box.
