Windows 10 problem

I own a dell Inspiron computer which is about 4 years or so old. It had XP on it and was running real good. I began receiving notices that windows 10 was available. I talked to my brother who said he updated his computer and didn't have a problem. So I went and updated the computer. Well the download and install went without a hitch. The problem began when the computer tried to reboot. Windows opens up to the sign-on window. I type in my password and the password is accepted, and it moves onto the desktop. Once at the desktop, the system loads my desktop picture and then freezes up. It then starts to flash the desktop picture on and off. It does this and will not move on. It won't load any icons at all. I went and hit f12 at startup and got into the system and it ran a system scan and everything passed. I want to just get 10 of my system. I purchased a new system as I had to have a working desktop so all I want to do is restore the old computer back to factory settings. I've already tried hitting f8, f10 with no luck. the only f button working is F10. Any suggestions?
Thanks in advance

Well, if it had XP on it you couldn't have updated. You would have to have done a clean install meaning everything is gone and you can't go back to XP. Your best bet is to do a clean install again as most likely something happened during the install.

Are you sure it had XP on it? If it's 4 years old then it would have had windows 7 on it.

Actually I just checked with my disks and I found a Dell Operating System CD. It looks like it must of had Vista as the operating system. I have the Reinstallation DVD for Vista Home Premium. If I insert it into the drive, will it allow me to format the hard drive and reinstall the original operating system?
Thanks

another quick question, Do I have to go in and change the boot sequence or will it automatically detect the install disk. I don't know if I can get into to change the boot sequence.

Try pressing the f12 button on bootup to access boot options. If not access bios to change boot order.

Enter safe mode, uninstall your graphics drivers, restart, run DisplayDriverUninstaller, restart, install latest graphics driver, restart, update windows...
