So I'm about to grab a copy of Windows 7 from there, for my new build. They're all the same price, I'm assuming pro/64bit is the way to go.
What worries me, though, is that it's an "upgrade". I'm getting the physical CD, which is supposed to allow a "clean" install, but do I still need a version of windows to be installed to use it? I have 4-5 dell/HP XP/Vista disks (and the computers they came with), as well as a retail XP home with no key that a friend gave me, but I'm not sure if I can put them on a blank hard drive, as those computers are all either laptops or use PATA. The only thing I can think of is to put the disk in the new system and attempt to use the old one's key, but isn't it tied to the mobo?
I couldn't find this anywhere on MS's site...maybe I'm looking in the wrong place?
edit: And if I do need a new one, would it be too wrong if I just used a cracked OS? I've got like 5 legit copies of windows...it's just hardware that's limiting me.
edit again: I also have a retail version of 98. Think it'd count that?
