Win741.com..do I need a current version of windows?

So I'm about to grab a copy of Windows 7 from there, for my new build. They're all the same price, I'm assuming pro/64bit is the way to go.

What worries me, though, is that it's an "upgrade". I'm getting the physical CD, which is supposed to allow a "clean" install, but do I still need a version of windows to be installed to use it? I have 4-5 dell/HP XP/Vista disks (and the computers they came with), as well as a retail XP home with no key that a friend gave me, but I'm not sure if I can put them on a blank hard drive, as those computers are all either laptops or use PATA. The only thing I can think of is to put the disk in the new system and attempt to use the old one's key, but isn't it tied to the mobo?

I couldn't find this anywhere on MS's site...maybe I'm looking in the wrong place?

edit: And if I do need a new one, would it be too wrong if I just used a cracked OS? I've got like 5 legit copies of windows...it's just hardware that's limiting me.

edit again: I also have a retail version of 98. Think it'd count that?

i've heard that you can use the upgrade disks for a full install by just clicking "next" when it asks you to enter your cd key. (i have only heard this, no first hand experience)

so i'm not sure if that helps at all.

Yes that is all you have to do, not enter the cd key during installation.

you will then have to activate within windows, and call microsoft, give them your cd key, and they will send you an activation key. (at least thats how i did it on windows xp)

I heard you don't need to call Microsoft.

Once the Upgrade is installed, without the CD key, it will bother you to activate,
and when you enter the CD key that comes with the Upgrade, you're good to go.

If the Upgrade comes with a CD key...?

That's...odd. If it works I'll take it though! Thanks guys :)

edit: Through some google searching I also found that if you call the MS store's 877 number, as long as you have a .edu email, you can get the full version for $30 + S&H. Haven't tried it yet, but IMO that's a better alternative than hoping that the tricks with the upgrade version work properly.
