Win11 Activation Error

I just upgraded from Windows 10 to Windows 11 and I didn’t use an activation key. I decided to transfer the key from Windows 10 to Windows 11. When I choose to troubleshoot activation key, it gives the error 0x80070520. My other account won’t give the error, but since it’s not the original account on the PC, I can’t transfer the key. Any ideas?

In your scenario, the fact that another account on your PC doesn't give the error strongly suggests a problem related to the specific Microsoft account permissions or profile corruption, rather than a fundamental licensing problem.

  • First, confirm your Windows 10 license was previously tied to your Microsoft account:
    • Go to Settings → Accounts → Your info, and ensure your original Microsoft account (the one you used on Windows 10) is signed in.
  • Then, use the built-in Activation Troubleshooter explicitly designed for account-linked activation:
    • Go to Settings → System → Activation.
    • Select Troubleshoot, then choose the option "I changed hardware on this device recently" even if you didn’t (this option helps in re-establishing your digital license link).
If that doesn't resolve it, sign out and back into your Microsoft account or try creating a new local user account and then linking your original Microsoft account to it.
