Will wireless slow down internet speed?

I currently have one computer connected to the internet, I'm getting a laptop next month so I'll need wireless networking. My current connection speed is 100 Mbps, the best router I can find is 54 Mbps, does this mean that if I revert to a router rather than a modem, my internet connection will be slower?

Well first let me clean up one thing for you - your internet speed is not 100 Mbps. That's the potential speed of the ethernet connection you have. To find out your actual speed, use a speed test website like this or contact your service provider.

And in answer to your question, you will see pretty much no difference in speed by wirelessly connecting your laptop. That is of course, both pc and laptop are trying to download something, then of course the connection will be split in two.

Oh, I thought it was that. Uhmm another question: I've been getting these security alerts from Norton notifying me of a 'Dialer', it then scans and deletes, it does this every 10-25 minutes, I've tried looking through temp and temp net files- nothing. When I connect my laptop to the network, the virus can't be transfered without my consent can it?

Do you have a firewall installed? Norton Antivirus is perfectly good at removing an infection, but without a good firewall, your pc is still at risk from infection in the first place.

And wireless routers usually have a built-in hardware firewall, so that would probably block most things, but two lines of defence are better than one.

It may be worth posting a hijackthis log in the security section, just to see whether the dialer's being replaced by a running process. Instructions of what to do are here.

since your internet is probaly cable or adsl 1-8mb, having a 11mb 82.11b wireless card would still be faster then your internet.

no it wont effect you, it will nly effect you if you want to share files with another computer in your house
