Hi all, am new here, wondering if any of you can share your wisdom with me about wireless networks!

My situation is.... Have a computer (desktop) with wireless networking enabled and have one laptop which i use with the wireless network.
Running on Netgear wireless router DG834G.

up on till recently my wireless network has been fantastic all around my home strength was usually 54mbps and excellent but of recent its not so high and strength is very low.

What could be the problem...?

it is extremely annoying and frustrating when my laptop is frequently disconnected and I cannot view the internet!

All suggestions will be gratefully appreciated! Just dont know what to do...Can I configure the network settings without messing the entire thing up!

Thanks all!!! :-D

do you know the gigahertz of your network and your phone, or other devies that use WiFi? If you do please list GH of phones, and your router. It may seem unrelated, but I think I know what the problem is.
**NOTE: If your phone operates at 2.4GH, it could interfere with the network. Other devices such as microwaves will also do the same. Sadly, many routers operate at 2.4GH, so other running devices (es, even TVs) might be caseing the problem.

in your next post, please include the gigahertz of your phone and router, but if possible, the make and model of your laptop's WiFi adapter.

Hi again, thanks so much for all your help!!! Appreciate this so much :)

Emm....my laptops adapter is "Intel(R) PRO/Wireless 2200BG Network"

My router is 2.4Ghz its value is 802.11g

your phone may not use WiFi but it still uses radio signals to communicate. You may just wwant to make sure you are not using your phone, microwave, etc as they may interfere with the router signal. Also, it may not even be something that you are doing. It could be a neighbor or some one close you.

Ok so what should I do?

Do you recommend that I change the channel which my router operates on?

If my neighbour is operating on the same channel as me will that cause interference? What should I change it to and is this operation risky?!?

you could try to change your channel, and no. It's not risky. Go into your router's config and edit the channel info. Then go back to your other computer(s) and change the WiFi adapter's config to a different channel. Don't use 7, 11, or 1 for the channel. 7 (i think) is the reccomended one, so don't use it. 1 and 11 are just logical for some one to use. 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8,
9, and 10 are ones you could use.

Yes... If a neighbor is using the same channel it may cause interfereence.

ive used channel 6 now

still having the same problems with the connection breaking off on my laptops all the time

any other ideas guys!!!!!?

sorry I was gone...

Let's try to speed this up...
If your desktop comp is Windows 2000 or XP, (Pro and Home) go into the windows taskmanager. After that, find any processes (in the Processes tab) that with a "Mem Usage" above 15,000 and end them. But before you do that, see if you can close any programs, like Firefox, but also be careful not to end explorer.exe and svchost.exe which are both system tasks. Also, on the bottom of the Task Manager, there should be a CPU Usage box. If it shows anything above 50%, you'll know that you need to end some programs.
