My friend has bought a laptop and wants to use this around the house but in rooms where there are no wired connections. She has bought a Linksys Wireless - G ADSL "router"? (I think that is what it is?) and she has a modem provided by her ISP provider.

I am hoping to sort this out for her but am no expert myself and wonder if anyone would give me some idea as to what to do? I have got her connected to the internet with the modem as in a normal set-up but this is no use to her for everyday use as it is in a hallway and she wants to use the laptop upstairs and in other rooms as well.

The instructions with the kit are not exactly designed for novices so any help anyone can offer would be gratefully received.:confused:

Thanks.

plug the 2 foot ethernet cable from the modem to the back of the Router.

Open an IE window and type in one of these until the router config opens.

//home
//192.168.1.1
//192.168.1.0
//192.168.0.1
//192.168.0.0

Use the default ID/PW and (probably admin/admin or blank/admin)

Log in an change the router pw first, so nobody can login and change it.

If you give the model number I can give better directions.

if its a router, you shouldent have to plug it in to the modem, you just replace the modem with the router.

Hi, Trizoy,

It says on the box that it is a 2.4GHz Wireless-G ADSL Gateway with speedbooster! None of which means much to me I have to confess.

Thanks for your help thus far still trying to get my head round the thing.

As I have got her sorted out with the Modem do I use the Modem as well as the "router" or is this instead of it?

Sorry if I appear stupid and dim but unfortunately that's probably because I am!
