Hi i have Cable Internet and it goes unnormally slow like the connection would say 54MBps when im right next to the Wireless router with my desktop. I recently moved my desktop to my room and now it says 24MBps and when i download it downloads at 20 to 50 MBps and IN compare with my GF's internet we have the same ISP and modem but her internet is always connected at 100MBps and her downloading rates are around 200 MBps and her house is 2 times bigger than mine! why is my internet so slow? Please someone explaine! Thanks in Advance!

you say you have it connected to a wireless router?
how many computers are getting cable internet through this wireless router?

OK you are a little confused as to what all the numbers mean.
When your using wireless internet your connection between PC'S (networked) can be UPTO 54mbps.

If your wired with a Cat5 cable, you are wired to other pcs (same network again) at 100mbps.

NOW, these numbers have NOTHING to do with what speeds you are actually seeing, when downloading or using the net. Your ISP offers you service (I will assume) around 1.5mbps/384kbps
This means the most the isp will give you is burst speeds up to 1.5mbps downloading and 384kbps uploading. The keyword here is BURST.. They dont always give you that speed.

Now to the key problem here.. Your internet is slow. This could be due to othee programs running on your pc, it could be from other people mooching the wireless signal from you.

Do you have wep keys set up on your signal?

I dont know what wep keys are? lol

When you first connected to your wireless signal, did you have to put in a pw to make the connection?

If you did not, then many users may be using your internet with permission.

.

No it was attamatically connected. Wouldnt the users how to be in a close range to be able to use my internet signal?

yes within 100-150ft. You can login to the router and look for the client list. It will tell you how many people are logged in.

Oh alright, so where does it tell me how many people are logged in?

Depends on the router... It will be called dhcp list, or users... possible under the wireless area. I dont know what router you have.

who is your isp and how much are you paying for this 100m/10 connection
Ok I hooked up my computer with the cable wire instead of the antenna and now its at 100 MBps so thats good.

OK you are confused. Yes, the computer says your 100/10 mb connections is good. That is NOT your speed. If you had a 100mb connection you could download a full length movie in about 10seconds. The 100/10 means the speed between computers on your own network. If you are wireless G this speed is 54mbps..

BUT, you purchase a certain speed from your ISP I would assume something around 3mb/1mb... So I ask again.. what speed do you have?

Here is a speed test

Here it is Communications 462.3 kilobits per second
Storage 56.4 kilobytes per second
1MB file download 18.1 seconds
Subjective rating Not bad

Ok, from your past posts... you have cable, you are connected wirelessly to your router, and it is now slower that it was before you moved the PC. I hope this is all correct..

Cable internet is USUALLY faster than ADSL. DSL is one user per DSL across the phone line. Cable internet on the other hand is somewhat shared. If a lot of epople in your area have cable, and are using it... it will have anoticable effect on your speeds. That may be why your connection is so slow as sompared to your GF.

BUT, the reason your speed has dropped since the move (54MBps to 24MBps to 20). Your wireless connection in your new spot is bad. You eityher are further from your router, or cement walls (in jail?), also metal interior walls... Anyway, you have 4 options.

-Leave it the same
-Run a cat 5 cable from the router to your computer. You will always get the maximum speed that your isp can offer. It will have no wireless connection.
-Move your computer to a better spot, move the router to a better spot.
-Buy one of these and move it yo an area where you get a better connection.
(Antenna)Extension cord)

You dont need the extension, but if it gets you a better signal, it is a good idea.
