Why does it reconnect frequently ?

Hi,

I have my router in the basement and my second desktop with a wireless adapter (linksys everything) on the second floor. I'd say every 10 minutes when I am in the basement my 2nd floor computer will lose the connection and then restart because MSN Messenger will restart. Another note is that when I am on the 2nd floor desktop, it doesnt lose connection "as much" as when I am not near it.

I also have a laptop (dell) with a built in wireless card and have never had this problem. What could be the culprit and is there anything I can do to rectify this situation?

THX in advance.

When the system on the 2nd floor is left idle the connection is seeing a momentary disconnect. That could very well be due to a "timed out" server that messenger connects to through your ISP.

Could be interference with that distance. It is a good idea to keep the wireless signal at line of sight.

Do you have a screen saver or other program set to start at any given time? If it isn't from an outside source it suggests either something on that idea or a simple driver hang after being idle for a period of time. Generally when you want a system to be set as a dedicated one you would use a hardwired rather then wireless method to remain in contact. It does suggest that the connection isn't refreshing itself to remain connected.

Hi,

I was wondering if you could expand on the connection refreshing and what do I need to do to enable this?

THX

With I.Explorer when you leave one page to go to another for several minutes and then try to return to the previous page you will often see "session has expired" or "page cannot be displayed" types of messages when the server has disconnected your logon due to being what is called "timed out". Likewise you are leaving messenger sitting idle for an extended period of time. This is most likely the cause since you are seeing this on a consistent time frame of 10 minutes. To refresh a connection you have to press the refresh button on IE while messenger doesn't offer that from what I've seen. Once you are timed out you would have to relog onto the server again. Right before the disconnect you would have to have some activity in order to keep that connection going.
