Why do subsequent backups take so long?

I use a software called Paperport (scanning software) and I use it to run a paperless business. In other words I have a ton of files that I want to backup regularly. I can understand the first backup taking 30 minutes or so but what I don't understand is if I go to back up the next day and only have one or two new scans it still takes 30 minutes. Is there something I can do to just back up the "new" scans only. Thank you. Frank

What are you using to backup the files? And do you want to be able to backup files that have changed or just added files? I think there are command prompt utilities within windows that can do what you need

You need backup software that has the 'incremental' included, it needs to make a full backup first and all subsequent backups can be incremental, ie only files that have been modified or are new.

I just send them to my external drive. So, it appears that is not sufficient and I need backup software. Please recommend a good one. Freeware if possible. Thank you. Frank
