Why do I keep having to restart my router?

I'm on a wireless cable internet network at my house and i've consinstently had problems with keeping the internet connection up. At my house, 4 of us share the signal from the router (Microsoft brand). I defintely use the most bandwidth though (i do a lot of bittorent downloading). Anyways, we have to unplug and re-plug the router's power chord about a dozen times daily to get the internet to work throughout the day. The connection will be up for a while then it stops working, but often times everything looks fine from my computer (the link quality and signal strength on my wireless card is perfect, my wireless network connection looks perfect, etc.) Reparing the the connection from my computer sometimes works, but usually i have to go to the router to unplug and re-plug it. Then when i repair the connection, it works. I repeat this process several times daily.

I don't know much about this stuff, but i'm thinking either the modem or router is defective (however this problem has occurred with two different routers) or maybe i'm using to much bandwith (but definitely less than the connection is rated for), causing the conneciton to get ruined. All i know is that this is really annoying. Any ideas?

Do you have cordless phones in the house and if so do they operate at the same frequency as your wireless router? This could definitly cause intermitent problems.

it may be that the connection is timing out, go to your router config page and look for timeout options. Set these to 0 so as to equal infinity i.e never time out

If you don't know how to do this then let me know what make and model router you have and i will write you a more detailed guide

Make sure it is not sitting flat on the carpet, or any cloth surface as it may overheat. Stand it on end.

Thanks for all your responses. We have no home phone so that's not a problem. It's not overheating either.

The connection is not encrypted, but i didn't think it was necessary because there isn't anyone outside our house trying to leech on our network. How would encryption help with my problem?

As for the timeout issue, i couldn't find it on my router config page. I have a Microsoft MN-700.

I once was experiencing a 8-9 disconnection time at a friends house.. He says he is used to it...

I gave him a Wpa password, and it fixed it.

MS might have a type of security feature built in to disconnect from unsecured networks.

Try it, and maybe it will help

Cant hurt anything right?

Dont know if your still looking for a solution but if you google connection issues while running bitcomet or bittorent youll find that while using these d/l programs the router cant keep up with the amount of tcp/ip connections that are opened and it will kill your connection.

Happens to me all the time.
