which one is the best?

What are you going to be doing with them? Are you going to be recording/listening to music? or playing games?

they actually aren't for me, i am configuring a computer for someone else... they are going to be gaming and listening to music... and be using some REALLY nice surround sound speaker setup...

Well no doubt any card you choose of those 3 will have significantly better sound than most standard sound cards on the market. if you wanna save money go with the audigy 4. I had an audigy 4 a while ago on my old computer but it burned out after the warenty was up. (god knows why)

The x-fi elite is better but for $200 more (after rebate) you tell me if its worth it. As for the E-MU i would know nothing about and have never even heard of the bastard, and with no ratings i would porbably stay away from it... just my thoughts

I would go with the X-Fi Fatal1ty, since it's the exact same thing as the Elite except the external bay is different. Personally, I prefer the one that goes in your drive bay to an external one.

why is the X-FI better/more expensive when it has a lower sample rate & SNR then the other ones
The sample rate and the SNR isn't all that makes up a card.

It's a well known fact that the X-Fi has some crazy SPU onboard which can do over 10,000 MIPS, blowing away the EMU and the Audigy 4.

Secondly, a 96KHz sampling rate is perfectly enough, as you won't be able to notice a difference between 192KHz and 96KHz, unless you are a hardcore audiophile with $600+ headphones. The same goes for the SNR. Even though the SNR is lower on the X-Fi than the Audigy 4 and the EMU, you again would need to have really good ears to notice any difference at all. Not to mention that the processing power of the X-Fi basically negates any negative attributes of the card.
